Our thoughts are very much with the family and friends of all of the Armed Forces personnel who have lost their lives recently, with some close to our HQ in Devon.

The Armed Forces and Veteran community is a strong family and these loses are felt by us all.

We recently welcomed some of our incredible supporters for tea and Devonshire scones at beautiful Cadhay House in Ottery-St-Mary (thank you Cadhay House!), as a big thank you for their amazing support to Veterans With Dogs.

Set against the stunning backdrop of Cadhay's beautiful gardens, our supporters heard from staff, trustees, and puppy socialisers about our work to assist veterans facing mental health challenges. We were also delighted to introduce some of our pups in their socialisation phase, showcasing the positive impact of our supporters' contributions.

Our work to support veterans with mental health challenges relies entirely on voluntary donations and the generosity of our funders. Every grant, donation, fundraising challenge, and partnership plays a crucial role in fuelling our work, and we are immensely grateful to all of our supporters. Thank you.

Wow, wow, wow!

Leanne Chappell certainly had a perfect day for jumping out of a plane!

A huge thank you to Leanne for taking on a skydive challenge to raise vital funds for Veterans With Dogs, in memory of her brother-in-law Lee.

“Lee was a paratrooper in the 1st Battalion, The Parachute Regiment (Pte Grant). After 5 years of service, Lee battled with his own mental health but found strength and comfort from his beloved dog, Dash. It is a pleasure to raise money for Veterans With Dogs to give other veterans the chance to have a dog change their life and give them purpose, calm, and routine.”

Leanne has raised a whopping £1,100 towards our work which is fantastic. Thank you Leanne!

It’s Fundraising Friday!

This is Leanne, who will be jumping out of a plane this weekend to raise funds for VETERANS WITH DOGS, in memory of her brother-in-law, Lee.

“Lee was a paratrooper in the 1st Battalion, The Parachute Regiment (Pte Grant). After 6 years service, Lee battled his own mental health but found strength and comfort from his beloved dog Dash. I am raising money for VETERANS WITH DOGS to give other veterans the chance to have a dog change their life and give them purpose, calm and routine.”

Thank you Leanne, for your incredible fundraising and commitment to making things better for veterans experiencing mental health challenges. We are sure Lee would be very proud of you.

We were delighted to be welcomed to the Forthglade Natural Pet Food factory last week to see first-hand the incredible care, quality, and expertise that goes into producing their natural dog food.

Forthglade Natural Pet Food are long-standing corporate partners of Veterans With Dogs, and we are incredibly proud of our ongoing partnership with a company that shares our commitment to dog welfare and wellbeing. As a certified B Corp, their values-led approach and commitment to doing business responsibly makes the partnership even more meaningful to us.

Not only do they generously provide food for our puppies in socialisation, helping to ensure our future assistance dogs get the very best nutritional start in life, but they have also sponsored some of our puppies through their early development journey.

It was fascinating to see the whole process from start to finish and to meet the passionate team behind the brand. As a charity based locally in Devon, it means a huge amount to have such brilliant support close to home.

Partnerships like this genuinely make a difference to the veterans and dogs we support every day.

Thank you to everyone at Forthglade Natural Pet Food for your continued support, generosity, and warm welcome. 🐾

We know that was last week, but Laurence and Crunchie are an incredible Assistance Dog partnership and we wanted to share...

"When I was serving, I never really believed I could be broken. You just keep going with another deployment, another operation, another patch-up and back out again. Until eventually, the crash comes. PTSD, pain, anxiety, isolation, and days lost staring at four walls wondering how life became this.

I never even considered myself a ‘dog person’. But then I met Crunchie.

He sleeps beside me, grounds me, and somehow taught me how to be human again. He brings joy into our home, helps me reconnect with my wife and children, and gives me a reason to keep going.

I am still here because of him."

Thank you Laurence, for sharing the impact that Crunchie has made on your life.

We know that Mental Health Awareness Week was last week, but our veterans receive support from their Assistance Dogs year-round. We wanted to highlight brilliant Freddie, who supports his veteran through consistent training, confidence, resilience, and calmness.

"Complex PTSD had stopped my life in its tracks and I was barely surviving day to day. I never left the house alone and I was always afraid.

Debilitating dissociative episodes were constant putting my life in danger, and depression and anxiety ruled my life. Nightmares kept me awake all night ,and panic attacks filled my days. Life was exhausting and pretty bleak.

I was paired up with Freddie, my amazing black Labrador in 2021 and from the moment he came to live with us I felt that once again I had a purpose. My outlook on life slowly changed and I couldn’t hide away any more as I had to take him out. As time went on I even started running again with Freddie by my side.

Freddie helped me see that I wasn’t useless and as we passed all our assessments with flying colours, my confidence started to grow. I loved training him and our bond is amazing. We qualified as an accredited Assistance Dog partnership on Freddie's 3rd birthday and I was so proud.

Having Freddie by my side for 5 years now has enabled me to have a life, do normal things such as going to the shops or visiting the doctor alone, and not feel such a burden on my family, not be so ashamed. He even enabled me to fulfil a dream as a Harry Potter fan to visit the studio last year!

The Veterans With Dogs team have become part of our family. They are the most amazing people who produce life changing Dogs.

Life is still difficult every single day but having Freddie with me constantly reassuring me ..”it’s ok mum I’m here” his big squashy nose on my hand letting me know I’m safe helps more than anybody could imagine. His ability to know I’m unwell before I realise, redirect and ground me is unfaltering.

A guardian angel in the body of a dog."

Thank you for sharing your story about how being paired with Freddie has been truly transformational to your life.

It is fantastic to welcome new Puppy Socialisers to the Veterans With Dogs family!

Last week, our Dog Trainer, Becky, Puppy Lead, Sarah Carter, and Operations Manager, Julie Morrish, met with three new Puppy Socialiser families at our Exeter office. They discussed the puppy socialising process, what to expect, the training involved, the support provided, and of course... what comes next!

Puppy Socialisers are absolutely vital to our work. Without them, we cannot take on new puppies to begin their training, which means our waiting list continues to grow.

So we are absolutely delighted to welcome these superstars! Thank you for your commitment to supporting veterans with mental health challenges.

"Whilst receiving treatment through , I was introduced to the Veterans With Dogs assistance dog program. At the time I was quite isolated suffering from hyper vigilance, low self worth and lack of sleep.

After attending the meet & greet in Devon and seeing what help and support they offered veterans with PTSD I applied and, after a home assessment visit, I was accepted."

This , Paul told us about joining our Partner Animal Life Skills (PALS) programme with his own dog, Poppy, and what impact it has had on his life...

"I have my own dog, Poppy, who is a 2 year old black Labrador. She also passed the assessment and started her induction course January this year. We both attended the residential and the local training.

Having the support from the Veterans With Dogs team has changed my life. It has given me a routine, goals to achieve, and a real purpose again. I have attended more veterans events now because taking Poppy with me gives me more confidence.

I can’t really begin to explain how much Veterans With Dogs has changed my outlook on life. It’s been an incredible journey so far, watching how Poppy is doing with her training and supporting me in learning new life skills.

Me and Poppy have only just started on our journey with the PALs program but I am proud and excited to be part of this amazing charity supporting veterans with mental health conditions.

Thank you Veterans With Dogs team."
