Farms for City Children exists to remove the barriers that prevent children and young people having meaningful access to the natural world. During an immersive five-day residential stay on one of our stunning heritage farms in Devon, Gloucestershire and Pembrokeshire, children and young people participate in seasonal farming tasks alongside experienced farm teams and partner Farmers.

One week on the farm. Fifteen schools. One shared experience.

In our latest 50 voices story, Michael Rowland, Deputy CEO of Focus Trust, reflects on how a visit to Wick Court - Farms for City Children helps children from across the trust grow in confidence, pride and connection. 🌱

Many arrive nervous, travelling with children and adults they have never met before. By the end of the week, they return with new friendships, big stories and a sense of belonging.

We're so grateful for the time, expertise and commitment of all our amazing volunteers, we could easily nominate each and every one of them for recognition!

We're delighted to see the The Health Lottery Foundation shining a spotlight on Des, our wonderful volunteer who has dedicated so much of his time to creating beautiful artworks with our visiting children to mark and remember our 50th anniversary year at Nethercott House - Farms for City Children Thank you Des - this is so well deserved💚

We're still celebrating !

Today we have a nomination from Farms for City Children. For fifty years they've offered farm residentials for children and young people. Spending time on one of their farms is a transformative experience, with rewards that last long after they have returned home. Playing a part in transforming the lives of young visitors is Des.

Des has dedicated countless volunteer hours creating murals, banners, ceramics and a commemorative sundial for the Farms for City Children 50th anniversary, inspiring children through art while leaving a lasting legacy at Nethercott House in Devon.

On why he volunteers Des said, "I believe deeply in our mission to help young people thrive. Through art, I have brought creativity, joy and learning to Nethercott House, creating a lasting legacy that celebrates our 50 years of transforming children's lives."

Thanks to Farms for City Children for highlighting Des' creative contribution to your work.

🎉 This National Volunteer Week, we want to recognise the incredible people who have shared their time and expertise to make a vital difference throughout our 50 year history.

From the regular volunteers who support us on our farms, to the fantastic groups of colleagues from our corporate partners and our amazing Trustees - you’ve made an invaluable contribution to our charity over the last five decades.

Thanks to your support, more than 100,000 children and young people have been able to connect with nature, food and farming, creating experiences and memories that last a lifetime.

Thank you for being such an important part of our community. We couldn’t do it without you. 💚

In a survey by Natural England, 91% of children and young people agreed with the statement "being in nature makes me very happy".

Yet access to nature is shrinking and young people's wellbeing is under increasing pressure.

For fifty years, our farms have given children the space to learn, grow, and thrive. That space matters now more than ever.

Together, we can continue to provide transformative access to nature and farming, for the next fifty years and beyond. https://ow.ly/4Iwy50Z4irC

“Being outdoors makes me feel like I have a purpose. Because I don’t have a garden at home, here I can play with my friends. I can just be me.”

A week on the farm gives children something very simple and very powerful: space to breathe, play and grow in confidence.

What can a week on the farm 🐮🥕 unlock in a child?

Theresa Moses, headteacher at Paxton Academy, recently visited our Wick Court farm with her pupils. Her reflection beautifully captures the power of stepping away from the everyday.

Confidence. Curiosity. Calm. Connection.
Learning for life that happens beyond the classroom.
