As well as putting on hundreds of events, Exeter Phoenix also offers lots of opportunities to anyone who wants to get involved in something creative. The Creative Hub is where you can find out about creative opportunities, training, networking, and a whole host of social events.

📣 Calling all writers: the BFI NETWORK England Early Development Fund is now open! 📣

📝 Writers can apply for funding between £3,000 and £5,000 to develop an initial treatment for their debut feature project, outlining their story, characters, and themes.

Supported formats include original live-action, animation, or immersive fiction projects. Projects that successfully deliver their stage one treatment can then apply for a second round of funding to write the full feature-length script.

🗓️ Applications are now open and will close on Wed 11 Nov 11am.

💻 The team are also hosting a range of activities to support south west-based applicants, alongside blogs on our website exploring the fund and how applicants can put their best foot forward!

In October DOCLAB, our monthly meet-up for documentary filmmakers, is presenting a screening titled Cornwall on Camera in Studio 74. 🎬

The screening brings together three distinct documentary voices within Cornwall for an evening exploring a shared connection to place. 🦑

We chatted with Digital Programme Coordinator Luke Hagan to find out more about what the group have been up to and what to expect during this screening of works.

Out There Fringe Fest: Q***r culture, centre stage 🌈

The South West's first q***r fringe festival is back! When it first launched in 2024, the ambition was simple: create more space in Exeter for LGBTQIA+ people to see themselves, their stories and their creativity reflected in the arts and culture around them.

We chatted to the team about the festivals impact and bringing national talent to Exeter while also supporting local artists.

🦢 Our Performance Programmer Katy Danbury chatted with playwright and performer Vyte Garriga about her new play Paper Swans which is being presented in association with innovative ensemble-led storytellers Flabbergast Theatre.

The show draws on the traditions of the Theatre of the Absurd, visual symbolism and Vyte’s personal experience as a woman from post-Soviet Lithuania coming to the UK.

‘I am a big fan of the Theatre of the Absurd. I find it extremely liberating and human.’

Paper Swans is coming to Exeter Phoenix on Thu 15 Oct.

Exeter Phoenix Scratch Night in collaboration with Exeter Northcott offers South West based artists in need of an audience a chance to stretch their ideas and the opportunity to test their work in the Exeter Phoenix Auditorium, along with £150 to help develop their idea and a small amount of rehearsal space before the Scratch Night.

The annual Dead Poets Slam is back, as part of the Spork! Poetry Halloween Special

Six famous poets will rise from the dead, brought to life by six contemporary artists for one night only, on Fri 30 October
They’ll battle it out in a chance to win everlasting life, plus a cash prize of £100.

Using a mixture of their own poetry, the work of their alias, and some stuff they make up on the night.
Expect punches, pithy remarks and pure fire, in the ultimate graveyard smash.

Acclaimed folk theatre company Riddlestick Theatre presented their new musical comedy at Exeter Phoenix last week. 🪗

The show is inspired by English lore, folk horror, and ‘wyrd’ 1970s telly, featuring traditional and original music and dance. 📺

We caught up with them to find out more about where they started and what they enjoy about the South West creative scene.

Sarah is a practising ceramics and fine artist and is a regular tutor at Exeter Phoenix. Observation of human and natural form (in both 2D and 3D media) has remained central to her interests. 🎨

Sarah focuses on learning ‘ways to see’ that are key for expressing the world of form around us, and on sharing skills and techniques in an informal atmosphere, which bring out the best creative ideas.

We chatted with Sarah to find out more about her practice and what she enjoys most about teaching classes here. 🖌
