ITV News reports on the moving tributes paid to Ayrton Redfearne at his memorial in Brixham, following his death in action in Ukraine in May 2026.

The report also features expressions of heartfelt sympathy, honour and profound gratitude from the Devon Ukrainian Association, on behalf of the Ukrainian community across Devon, recognising Ayrton’s courage, selflessness and ultimate sacrifice in defending Ukraine and its people.

We honour his memory and extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.

🇺🇦 ONE LAST APPEAL FOR MYLA. £1,465 TO GO - 24 hours left!.

Our fundraiser closes on Monday, 12 October, at 9:00 AM.

We have less than two days left to raise the final £1,600 towards our £5,000 emergency appeal for the families of Myla, Ukraine.
On 28 August, a devastating Russian attack tore through this small community near Kyiv. Homes were destroyed, families displaced, and lives changed forever.

Since launching this appeal, we have been in contact with the community and have received records of the destroyed homes and families who urgently need assistance. Behind every name and address is a life interrupted, a home filled with memories, and people trying to find their way forward.

We have already raised £3,420. Can we come together one last time to reach £5,000?

This money will go towards practical assistance for affected families, coordinated with the local community authorities. It cannot undo what happened, but it can help people face the difficult days ahead.

To everyone who has already donated, shared our appeal, or helped us spread the word - thank you. Your kindness has travelled far beyond Devon.

And to those who have been meaning to contribute, this is our final call.

🎬 Film Premiere in Exeter: Helping Animals in Ukraine 🇺🇦🐾

We would like to share information about a special film premiere taking place in Exeter.

The film was made during a recent trip to Ukraine, where the team supported cats and dogs being cared for in shelters across the country.

It is not only a story about animals. It is also a story about the people who continue to rescue, care and protect the most vulnerable despite the extraordinary challenges of war.

We also want to share this deeply personal part of Olena’s story.

The footage shows the destroyed apartment building she once called home, the place she had to leave behind when she fled Ukraine with her young son.

Alongside that loss is another story: one of extraordinary human kindness.

After Olena and her son left Ukraine in July last year, Refugees at Home connected them with the Browning family, who welcomed them into their home in Exeter.

With their generosity, care and support, Olena and her son have been able to regain some stability and a sense of safety in their lives.

Olena speaks with deep gratitude about the Brownings, and we would also like to say a heartfelt thank you to them, for opening their home, for their kindness, and for giving a family warmth and security at a time when they needed it most.

A destroyed home cannot simply be replaced. But through compassion and generosity, people can help someone begin to feel that they are not alone, and that there is a place from which life can begin again. 💙💛

Our hearts and thoughts are with Ayrton’s family as they face this immeasurable loss.

Ayrton Redfearn, from Paignton, was just 23 when he was killed in the Donetsk region while serving with the Ukrainian Armed Forces. His family have spoken of how deeply committed he was to Ukraine and to the people alongside whom he served. He had joined a specialist unit and was reportedly due to receive a bravery award for saving another person’s life.

For Ukrainians living here in Devon, stories like Ayrton’s carry a particular weight. They remind us that Ukraine’s struggle has also been shared by people from other countries who chose, at extraordinary personal cost, to stand alongside Ukrainians in defence of their freedom and their lives.

Our thoughts are with Ayrton’s mother, his family, friends and everyone who served with him.

His family are inviting members of the public to attend his funeral on Saturday 10 October at 12.30pm at Lupton House, Brixham, with military personnel and veterans especially welcome. Those planning to attend are asked, where possible, to email [email protected] so the family can plan for numbers.
