Have your say! The funding could be used to make significant changes for Montrose - what would that look like?

£𝟏.𝟗 𝐌𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐋𝐎𝐂𝐀𝐋 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐌𝐔𝐍𝐈𝐓𝐘 – 𝐇𝐀𝐕𝐄 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐒𝐀𝐘!

An important consultation is now open on the future Inch Cape Community Fund, which is expected to make around **£1.9 million available for community benefit across Montrose, Ferryden and Craig.** 🌱

This is a significant opportunity for our area – and local people, community groups, businesses and organisations are being encouraged to help shape **how the fund will work.**

The consultation is looking at things such as:

👉 Who should be eligible to apply
👉 How the fund should be managed and governed
👉 How funding decisions should be made
👉 How the money can be distributed fairly and transparently
👉 How the fund can make the greatest difference to our communities

This is our opportunity to help shape a substantial investment into Montrose, Ferryden and Craig, so we would strongly encourage as many local people and organisations as possible to take a few minutes to complete the survey.

Do you get excited when you start to hear and see the geese flying over? I certainly do! And I love getting off the train at Montrose and hearing the ruckus when they are all on the basin!

What other ways can we encourage celebrating nature in our own backyard?

We're very excited to announce the return of Scottish Wildlife Trust's this year, 1-11 October! 🪿🎉

After last year's success with all our pink-footed goose themed celebrations, we're back this October with even more ways to experience the spectacle of the tens of thousands of geese that Montrose Basin is internationally important for.

The local primary school children will also be helping fill the visitor centre, the High Street, and Murray Street with hundreds of skeins of beautifully coloured pink-footed geese. 🪿🪿🪿

And we're so pleased that the town of Montrose, and beyond, is getting involved too! Been a little quiet here! Sorry about that-- but a lot happening behind the scenes!

From Montrose LandxSea Film Fest to finding a lovely local(ish) publisher for A Mermaid's Tail by David G Pullar and illustrated by Amanda Murray Art.

This weekend is the opening for the Health of the Sublime exhibition by Carrie Fertig at The Barn including the wonderful map of Montrose that was worked on in POP By ProMo.

I have been sharing about the project with a few different networks and of course - planning for next steps. Hints include: more chances to get involved, some minecraftieness, mermaids and past/present/future stories!

And there's some help coming on board to keep the socials a little more lively in the coming months!

Next week at the Barn | Workshop: Imagining the Future by Eve Mosher

As part of the Health of the Sublime exhibition, join artist Eve Mosher for a creative and collaborative workshop in which we’ll use imaginative world-building exercises to confront our changing climate. Using sensory and creative tools, we’ll expand our imagination to explore dream future scenarios through writing, drawing and building. Working as part of a group, we’ll each bring to life a piece of our imagined sublime futures which we can take home to remind us of what is possible when we work together.

Eve Mosher is a socio-ecological artist working at the intersection of climate change, community, and imagination. She is the Culture for Climate Scotland Sea Change imbedded artist in Montrose. Her work develops tools of imagination to help communities tell their own stories of tomorrow.

In case you missed it...

Montrose Coastal Erosion Project - June update:

Observations of the rock groyne indicate that it’s doing its intended job, with the build-up and retention of sand. It is subject to monthly surveys by University of Glasgow who are monitoring changes in the dunes, rock groyne, access points and the Seafront Splash. Data is currently being assessed.

New Danger signage is also being installed along the boundary of the steepest sections of the dunes along the second fairway at Montrose Golf Links.

And we also want to stress the importance of dune marram grass once again. The success of the dune marram grass is key as it's brilliant at trapping sand above ground and binds sand below ground with its root system. Marram grass creates conditions for other plants and animal to thrive and is hardy enough to tolerate extreme weather conditions, in a saltwater environment.

What it can struggle with is human activity – so please avoid walking and trampling over the marram grass-covered dunes. Doing so can break the stems and roots binding sand together, cause vegetation death, and worsen the already extremely challenging coastal erosion problem at Montrose.

Talks are ongoing between Angus Council, Montrose Port Authority https://orlo.uk/WxkWN, and other partners on the Montrose Coastal Erosion Project, to establish whether there are new opportunities to renourish and raise the neighbouring sand dunes. Detailed discussions continue and, if successful, could prove to be of great longer-term benefit to the ongoing endeavours to stave off the coastal erosion at Montrose.
