Last week, colleagues from the RSE travelled to Germany to strengthen relationships with key partners and explore new research collaboration opportunities between Scotland and Germany.

A packed visit included meetings and presentations from the DAAD Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, DFG, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the MWK, VolkswagenStiftung and European Centre for Advanced Studies (ECAS) as well as stops to leading research facilities in Hannover, Bonn, and Lüneburg.

From seeing the extremely impressive, world's longest, Total-Body PET scanner at Hannover Medical School to learning about quantum sensing technologies (to identify unexploded mines and bombs underground) at Leibniz University, and hearing about innovative social science and humanities collaborations, the breadth and quality of research on display were inspiring.

A particular highlight was our roundtable, Connecting Lower Saxony and Scotland: Pathways for Transregional Research Collaboration, which featured representation from universities, researchers, and award holders to reflect on the impact of the Scotland–Lower Saxony Research and Innovation Scheme so far and to explore ideas for how we might best support moving forward.

The visit reinforced the strength of our partnerships, which was not only intellectually stimulating but also extremely congenial – we’re very much looking forward to continuing important work in partnership with Germany.
