SUVs are more resource-intensive to produce, and their heavier weight increases tyre and brake wear, releasing harmful particles into the air.
Even electric SUVs aren’t impact-free — battery production relies on materials like lithium and cobalt, linked to habitat destruction, water pollution, and exploitative labour.
👉 SUVs aren’t just a street safety issue — they’re a public health and climate challenge too 🌍

Their height also means collisions are more likely to impact higher on the body, increasing the risk of serious injury.

Their size and shape mean impacts are more dangerous and more likely to cause serious harm.

Did you know…
In a crash, a vehicle moving faster or with greater mass will exert a greater force than a smaller, slower vehicle, meaning SUVs exert a larger force on impact compared to lower-weight cars travelling at the same speed.

A study of reported vehicle crashes involving cyclists showed that:
• SUVs inflicted significantly more severe injuries on struck cyclists compared with cars
• The typical head injury inflicted by SUVs was 63% more severe than that inflicted by cars
• SUV collisions are more likely to involve cyclists being injured than passenger cars.

Our bottom line: the enlargement of vehicles enlarges the negative upstream social and environmental externalities of production. This is why our campaign needs your help!

The average height of new cars is increasing ⬆️ half a centimetre a year (0.5cm), and with it, SUV drivers' blind spots are changing. This is dangerous for children and cyclists, increasing the risk of collisions and accidents.

Our campaign is about working with communities, local authorities, and the Scottish Government to address the growing size and weight of vehicles on our roads. 👫
