The advantages that the existing tramline has brought, and the recent effects of not being able to operate the section from Princes Street to Newhaven, has demonstrated how vital trams are to Edinburgh.

The cost of not progressing the Northern section will be huge in terms of impact on modal shift, capacity, connection of areas of multiple deprivation, mobility, climate targets, congestion, health, development, housing, and economic benefit.

Our policy advisor Nigel Bagshaw said:

“We strongly urge the Transport and Environment Committee to vote to proceed with the outline Business Plan procedure as agreed in previous policy and implement the entire north-south line, giving priority to construction of the Northern section whilst planning exactly how to build the Southern section.”

🚨Launch Day🚨

Our Ending Big Car Bloat campaign kicks off today!

As part of Earth Raise 2026's Big Give Fund, we're raising funds to help to build support for policies that target SUV size and weight. Collaboration is key 🔑 and all donations go directly to creating workshops, briefings, social media campaigns, and local on-street polling to inform and communicate the appetite for traffic reduction, particularly for larger vehicles 👫

Over the next week of fundraising, we'll be sharing our Top Six reasons why SUVs are not only an inconvenience on our roads, but also dangerous to our health, our economy and the well-being of the planet 🌎

Head over to our campaign page for full details on the campaign, where the money is going, and how to donate and share 🤝

During this period every donation is DOUBLED - so your donation will really make a difference! https://donate.biggive.org/campaign/a05WS00000CnMuvYAF

Please consider sharing and donating 💚
Happy Earth Day everyone!

Just 24 hours to go! 💚

We’re taking part in Big Give’s Earth Raise Fund, campaigning to EndBigCarBloat in Scotland!

We’ve got one last fact about why big cars like SUVs are causing more harm than good for our roads and environment…

Did you know...
Millions of cars on UK roads are now too big for standard parking spaces, with SUV growth driving a shift toward larger, heavier vehicles.
That means:
❌more congestion 🚗
❌less space for people 👫
❌and streets designed for smaller cars struggling to cope
👉 Our cities weren’t built for cars this size - and it’s showing.

Our campaign aims to use community engagement, communications, and local authority collaboration to build support for policies that target SUV size and weight.

You have one more day! Head over to our campaign page here:

Every donation is doubled, meaning that even the smallest contribution can make a big difference 🤝.

And it’s time for another fact about SUVs' environmental impact...

Bigger cars don’t just mean bigger emissions — they come with hidden health and environmental costs.
SUVs are more resource-intensive to produce, and their heavier weight increases tyre and brake wear, releasing harmful particles into the air.
Even electric SUVs aren’t impact-free — battery production relies on materials like lithium and cobalt, linked to habitat destruction, water pollution, and exploitative labour.
👉 SUVs aren’t just a street safety issue — they’re a public health and climate challenge too 🌍

And it’s time for another fact about SUVs' impact.

Did you know...
The design of SUVs means children are much harder to see from the driver’s seat, due to larger blind spots.
Their height also means collisions are more likely to impact higher on the body, increasing the risk of serious injury.
👉 As cars get bigger, our streets can become less safe for the people who need the most protection.

Our aims to help build support for policies that target the size of SUVs, prioritising people over cars 👫.

And it’s time for another fact about SUVs' harmful impact.

Did you know...
When SUVs hit cyclists, the injuries are significantly more severe — with head injuries around 63% worse than those caused by standard cars.
Their size and shape mean impacts are more dangerous and more likely to cause serious harm.
👉 SUVs aren’t just inconvenient — they increase the risk and severity of road collisions.

Our campaign is prioritising the safety of cyclists, children and vulnerable road users, putting their needs before SUV production. And we need YOUR help!
