The Edinburgh Remakery is an environmental social enterprise committed to diverting waste from landfill, building a stronger community, and promoting a culture of repair and reuse. We repair, refurbish and recycle what others send to landfill, and we pass these repair skills onto others within the Edinburgh community through education. What can you do at the Edinburgh Remakery?

We engage with thousands of individuals each year and seek to work in partnership with organisations across Edinburgh to increase social and environmental impacts. Our free Tech Disposal Service for Businesses enables us to work with some of the largest organisations across the city to prevent items going to waste. As well as accommodating our retail enterprise, through which we refurbish and sell on second-hand electronic equipment, the Remakery is also a community resource. We offer: educational and training opportunities within the circular economy, and more; creative workshops across a variety of craft disciplines focused around the theme of sustainable living; and paid apprenticeships for young people. Skill sharing is pivotal to what we do. We teach people how to repair and reuse their belongings rather than throwing them away and buying new, thus achieving environmental impact through landfill diversion and carbon reduction. By empowering communities to repair and reuse, we help improve financial literacy and capabilities, and help people living in adverse circumstances to access free and affordable electronic equipment. By providing training and employment opportunities, we are contributing to the creation of green jobs in the circular economy whilst addressing the skills gap and engaging young people with sustainable practices, and have previously piloted opportunities for people who have been furthest from the labour market due to adverse life circumstances e.g. homelessness / rehabilitation, and equipping them with hard and soft skills for future employment.

We are delighted to welcome Eoin Mackay to the Edinburgh Remakery team as our new E-commerce Coordinator! 💚

Eoin will be helping us grow our online presence, develop our e-commerce channels and make it easier for more people to choose professionally refurbished tech, keeping devices in use for longer while supporting a more circular approach to tech.

As Eoin puts it:

There’s plenty happening as we continue to grow our impact, and we are excited to have Eoin on board for the journey.

In the episode, Elaine explores Edinburgh Remakery’s approach to Social ITAD and why the story of an old laptop or phone shouldn’t end when a business no longer needs it.

A jumper with holes? A tired laptop? A lagging gaming console?

For the next six weeks, our Repair Cafes are proudly sponsored by Red Rock Renewables, helping us give more people the skills, confidence and support to repair what they already own.
Every Friday 11-1PM, our Repair Cafe gives people across Edinburgh a welcoming place to bring along broken tech, damaged clothing and textiles and, with help from our expert technicians and sewing tutors, learn how to repair them rather than replace them.
From fixing laptops and games consoles to replacing zips, patching holes and rescuing well loved clothes, these sessions help people save money, build practical skills and keep valuable items out of landfill.

From boring banker to Savile Row tailor. From maths teacher to a Fringe performer! 🎉

Meet Neil, whose career path has taken more twists and turns than a bobbin with commitment issues.
He is in Edinburgh for the Fringe with a fast, funny and reflective solo show about reinvention, bad decisions, missed opportunities, creativity and what can happen when you go all in on a more meaningful life.
And naturally, a story with this much sewing in it needed one very important supporting cast member, a sewing machine hired from Edinburgh Remakery 💚

We love seeing our equipment head off on new adventures, whether that’s helping create a Fringe show, tackling a repair, finishing a creative project or finally getting round to that sewing idea you have had for months.

Last year as part of Edinburgh 900, we brought people together at Edinburgh Remakery to explore our city’s stories through creativity, storytelling and the art of reuse.

Inspired by some of Edinburgh and Scotland’s best-loved literary figures, from Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Sir Ian Rankin, our participants transformed reused materials into beautiful pieces of art, each with its own story to tell and now, those individual creations have come together in something very special: our A City of Stories book 💚

It’s more than a collection of artwork. It’s a celebration of Edinburgh, imagination, community and what can happen when we give materials and ideas a new life.

A huge thank you to every participant who joined the workshops, shared their creativity and helped bring this project to life and a very special thank you to our brilliant workshop tutor and artist Isabell Buenz, whose creativity, encouragement and passion for reusing and repurposing materials made every session memorable.

We are incredibly proud of what everyone created together, a fitting handmade celebration of 900 years of Edinburgh and the stories that connect us.

We are finalists, twice! 💚

What if the things we throw away could become tools for connection, opportunity and change?

We are proud to have been shortlisted in two categories at the National Sustainability Awards, with the winners announced at the awards ceremony on 8 October 2026.

1) Circular and Recycling Award – Recycle
This recognition celebrates our work to keep valuable resources in use for longer. In 2025, Edinburgh Remakery diverted 52 tonnes of e-waste from landfill, gifted 224 devices to people facing digital exclusion, organised 40 Repair Cafes and delivered 15 Community Clubs.

2) Rising Star Award
We are equally proud that our Project and Marketing Executive, Asrar Qazi has been shortlisted for his work growing our Tech Donation Box programme.

In just one year, the programme expanded to 36 locations, saved 7,900 items from landfill, diverted 9.3 tonnes of e-waste and prevented an estimated one million kilograms of CO₂ emissions from being released.

But these numbers tell only part of the story.

Behind every donated device is a decision to choose reuse over waste. Behind every Tech Donation Box is a business, school or community willing to make that choice easier. And behind the sITAD programme is the creativity, determination and collaboration needed with businesses to turn old/unwanted tech into measurable environmental and social impact.

This recognition only goes to show what we can achieve if repair & reuse became the first choice. A huge thank you to our team, partners, supporters and every person who has donated their old/unwanted tech to us. This recognition belongs to all of you.

As a long standing member of the Edinburgh Social Enterprise Network we recently welcomed Mia Luk, its new Member Engagement Officer to Edinburgh Remakery.
