🦁 Big smiles and bright eyes at Thirsk Community Primary School! 👓✨

Just before the half-term break, our fantastic members from the Thirsk and Northallerton Lions had the absolute pleasure of visiting some wonderful Reception and Year 1 pupils for a special vision screening day!
In total, 40 super-brave little pupils got to test out our special camera! 📸 Inside that clever camera is a bit of tech magic—it checks for a whole range of vision issues, but its most important job for this age group is spotting "lazy eye." Catching this early means it can be easily fixed while the children are under 7, setting them up for a bright future! 🌟

Parents of the 40 pupils screened have now received a letter with their results. If our camera flagged a little wobble, we’ve advised parents to pop over to a local optician for a quick double-check.

🚀 Hey teachers, school staff, and governors—we want to visit YOU next! 🚀
We love doing this and want to bring our free screening to more schools across Thirsk, Northallerton, and Bedale. If you want your school to be part of this brilliant initiative, we'd love to hear from you!

🦁 Eye Spy Success at Sowerby Primary! 🦁

We had a fantastic Tuesday back at Sowerby Community Primary Academy for our second round of vision screening! Our Lions team was on a mission to help our local superstars see a little clearer, and it was a total success.

The Highlights:
38 amazing kiddos were screened for potential eye defects.

Our "magic" camera did its work—and while most were all clear, a few parents received a friendly letter suggesting a trip to the optician.

Whether it was a tiny detected issue or just a camera that couldn't quite get a clear "selfie," we’re all about making sure every child has the best view of their bright future! 👓

A Massive Thank You!
We want to send a huge roar of appreciation to Executive Head Mrs. Ungerechts for inviting us into both Sowerby and Alanbrooke Academy. We also couldn't have done it without the wonderful staff who kept everything running smoothly!

What an incredible day in Newcastle! 🦁✨

Members of our club headed to the MD105 Convention Newcastle 2026 for a packed Saturday of business and truly inspiring stories. The day struck the perfect balance between planning for the future and hearing about the amazing impact Lions have on the world.
We were moved and motivated by several powerful presentations:
Lion Charlotte Tait shared vital insights during her talk on Deaf Awareness.

We heard from the Special Olympics Great Britain team about their incredible athletes and leaders.

A deeply touching session on Childhood Cancer in the UK highlighted the "Step Up for Courage" initiative.
We also explored case studies on Child Sight UK.

Between the talks, we explored various displays, including the Environmental Action stall which is doing fantastic work spreading awareness to the next generation.
It wasn't all business, though—there was plenty of energy in the room! From interactive sessions to a bit of dancing, we had a lovely time connecting with fellow Lions.

Feeling inspired and ready to get back to work in our community! 🦁💙

✂️ THE BIG CHOP FOR LCIF! 🦁

A massive thank you to Trev from The Barber’s Chair for taking the time out of his day to help me with this transformation!

This time around, I’ve been raising money for the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF). They do incredible work both here in the UK and abroad when disasters strike. The best part? All the money raised goes directly to helping people on the ground, not to a CEO at the top of the organisation. 🌍❤️

Fair warning: This will be the last time I grow my hair out for charity! 🤣 If you see the curls coming back in the future, it’s only because I actually want them back next time! 👨‍🦲➡️👨‍🦱
How you can help:

If you’d like to support this wonderful cause, I’ll drop the donation link in the comments below. Every little bit helps!
Want to see the full process?
I’ll be posting the unedited version on YouTube over the next few days, so stay tuned for the "behind the scenes" of the curls disappearing!

👁️ Supporting Young Sight at Alanbrooke Academy!

We had a fantastic morning on Friday, April 24th, at Alanbrooke Academy Primary School for our first live session using the District’s new Child Sight Vision Screening Cameras.

These incredible Plusoptix S20 cameras can screen a child’s eyes in just seconds! It’s a non-invasive way to identify if a child might need a more detailed check-up with an optician.
📊 The Results:

26 children were screened and where appropriate parents were advised to visit an optician with their child. Detection is key to ensuring children have the clear vision they need to succeed in school!

🦁 Lions in Action

Our District was able to purchase 11 of these cameras thanks to matched funding from the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF). This is a perfect example of why our club and others donate to the Foundation every year—it allows us to bring life-changing technology directly into our local communities.
A huge thank you to Alanbrooke Academy for welcoming us!

On Tuesday 14 April, Easingwold Lions organised a visit to the Holgate Windmill in York. Lions from Easingwold, Minster Lions Club of York and Thirsk and Northallerton met at 10am; they were shown around the mill, discovering its history and how they continue to mill the flour today.

When they arrived it was a still day, but halfway through the wind got up and the sails started to go round. Following the tour, the Lions went for refreshments at the Bluebird Cafe. The day was concluded by a visit to the Wetherby Whaler for a fish and chip lunch.

A brilliant day out at the Swainby Sweep! 🌲 We loved being part of the MAD race today, whether we were serving up treats in the cafe or spotting runners out on the trails.
Well done to all the 7 and 16-mile finishers—you guys smashed it! 🏁✨

🦁 Help Someone See Clearly Again – Northallerton & Thirsk 👓
Do you have old spectacles gathering dust in a drawer? Instead of letting them sit there, let them change a life!
As part of Lions International Environment Service Week, the Thirsk and Northallerton Lions Club is collecting used glasses to be sorted, cleaned, and sent to eye clinics in developing countries. Your "old" glasses could be the "new" vision for someone in need.

We are proud to support the Miles for Mum challenge with a donation to this wonderful cause. A huge well done to Phil, who joined Matt at the leisure centre to show his support! Phil completed two laps of the course, clocking in a total of 6.41 miles. This 12-hour endurance event is all about seeing how many laps participants can achieve—great job to everyone involved!
