Dementia Adventure A more active and fulfilled life for everyone living with dementia. Registered charity number 1163163

Want to know more?

Dementia Adventure is a registered charity that is dedicated to supporting people to live well with dementia and have a sense of adventure in their It is estimated that one million people in the UK will have dementia by 2021. Until there is a cure we need ways to live better with dementia, slow its progress and reduce the likelihood of developing the condition. Evidence shows people with dementia

who engage with nature and outdoor activity have increased and sustained levels of well-being and quality of life. Evidence also suggests people who adopt a healthy lifestyle including exercise and regular outdoor activity can significantly reduce the risk of developing dementia in the future. We are a registered charity dedicated to supporting people with dementia to get outdoors, connect with nature, themselves and their community, and keep a sense of adventure in their lives. By raising funds we can significantly reduce the cost of our fully supported dementia holidays and could make a holiday possible for somebody who might otherwise not be able to afford to take a break. We can also provide free dementia training for family carers and do research into the benefits of outdoor activity. Through our training and consultancy services we work with other organisations to help equip them with the evidence, skills and confidence to give people greater choices and live better with dementia. We ground our work in research and we collaborate with academic institutions and the public sector to advance and contribute to the growing evidence-base for being physically active within nature and the benefits it brings to people living with dementia. By focusing on what people can do, rather than what they can’t, we support them to get outdoors, connect with nature, themselves and their community. Since 2009 we have trained thousands of individuals and organised many supported dementia holidaysβ€”making an enormous difference to people with dementia and their supporters. https://dementiaadventure.co.uk/about-us/contact-us/

Earlier this spring, Dementia Adventure founder Neil Mapes returned to one of the roles he loves most – leading adventures.

As Adventure Lead on our Highland Fling holiday in Scotland, Neil experienced first-hand the joy, connection and resilience that make these trips so special. In our latest blog, he reflects on the week and the "sun windows" that can help us navigate life's challenges.

Fiona made it to the top of Mount Toubkal, Morocco.

It wasn't easy. Unexpected snow, slippery terrain, and a 4am start for the final stretch to the summit. Even for an experienced walker, this was a challenge nobody had quite prepared for.

What made the difference was the people around her. The GUGB Get Up Give Back team supported each other every step of the way, and Fiona's mountain camping partner Natalie deserves a special mention. Without her, and the rest of the team, the summit wouldn't have happened.

We think about that a lot. So much of what feels impossible becomes possible with the right people beside you.

That's what we try to do for people living with dementia and their carers. Not mountain climbing, but helping people do things they thought were behind them. A boat trip. A round of golf. A supported holiday with a family member.

The GUGB team made Fiona's summit possible. And their AMAZING fundraising helps us do the same for the people we support.

Thank you πŸ’™ Every donation makes a difference. Link in the comments.
