Did you know…. that you can claim tax relief on your UNISON subscription fees. Read on if you want to know more.
We are often asked why UNISON members pay more for their membership than some other unions. The simple answer is that they don’t or at least not everybody does, it depends on how much you earn.
UNISON uses a sliding scale to determine your subscription level, so the more you earn the higher your rate, up to a maximum of £22.50 per month.
For members who are full-time students (affiliated to education providers and not employed by the Trust) membership is just £10 per year.
Special and reduced rates also apply to retired members and members who have become unemployed, are on maternity pay and have taken a career break.
Whatever subscription level you pay, you may also be eligible for tax relief on your subs and if you do not already claim this, it can be backdated for up to 4 years. It will not make you a millionaire but every little helps and this is a benefit that GMB members are not able to claim.
To claim your tax relief, you need to fill in form P67 which is the same form you will hopefully have already completed to claim tax relief on your professional body (HCPC etc.) registration fees and your uniform cleaning. You can do this online, and you only need to do it once and it will automatically renew each tax year.
