Did you know the far right are using Christianity to spread hate?
We recently read a Hope Not Hate report shining a light (no pun intended) on this growing trend.
Christian nationalism isn't new. It's where Christianity is used to push racist ideas about who belongs in Britain. The message is that to be 'truly British' or 'English', you need to be white and Christian. Black and Brown people and those following other faiths, particularly Muslims, are painted as threats to 'British culture'.
➡️ At the Unite the Kingdom rally in London, Brian Tamaki, head of New Zealand's Destiny Church, gave a hateful speech calling for a ban on any expression of non-Christian religion in the UK.
➡️ Since leaving prison and becoming a practising Christian, Stephen Yaxley-Lennon (Tommy Robinson) has claimed that the “fall of Britain has come from the fall of belief” and that a “Christian revolution is coming”.
➡️ Closer to home, UKIP leader Nick Tenconi joined protesters against the Islamic centre in Dalton, his arrival marking the appearance of people carrying large wooden crosses. It was noted by the counter protesters that he tried to say the Lord's Prayer but got the words wrong…
Last year, seven leading Church of England bishops released a statement warning against the growing use of Christian symbols by the far right, and a recent study by thinktank Theos revealed that Christian nationalism in Britain is being driven largely by people who rarely attend church or study the bible.
This should worry all of us, not just people facing racism under the veil of religion or those practising other faiths. We should all be free to follow any religion, or none at all.
Are you uncomfortable with faith being used to spread hate?
What action can you take?
As Christmas approaches, nativity plays will share messages of hope, kindness and sanctuary. If you're a parent, educator or even if you’re involved in the church and interested in chatting about this with our team, there's still time to join our workshop online this afternoon at 3.30pm. 'Nativity: Beyond the Teatowel', will explore these conversations further.
Book your place on the workshop now!
