Workshop ALERT!

One puppet, many voices.…

Third Figure is an emerging interdisciplinary collective bringing together contemporary puppetry and visual theatre, circus, applied theatre and contemporary dance. Developed through the Moving Identities residency programme, their shared practice explores new ways of working across disciplines and creating work for the stage.

During this two-day workshop, we’ll explore what can emerge when different bodies, ideas and materials meet through puppetry and collective creation.

Together, we’ll experiment with puppets and found objects as tools for storytelling. We will develop movement landscapes using a life-size puppet, and build a collective puppet from the ideas and reflections that emerge throughout the workshop.

The workshop will be facilitated by Third Figure members Edgars Niklasons, a theatre maker, director and dramaturg working across contemporary puppetry, visual theatre and physical performance, and Jordi Serena Ripley, an applied theatre and circus artist working with movement, inclusive storytelling and collaborative processes.

*Open to everyone, with or without puppetry experience.* We welcome people from different creative disciplines and backgrounds who are curious about exploring puppetry as part of a wider performance practice.

What to expect

– Guided physical warm up and movement session
– Group exploration tasks using a life sized puppet
– Building a collective puppet using found objects
– Tools for storytelling
– Exploring Gavin Glovers Dark puppetry methods to look at the relationship between puppet and puppeteer on stage

This is a two-day workshop that takes place across Saturday 17 & Sunday 18 October from 10:00-17:00

Tickets cost:
£40 – Standard (for both days)
£30 – Low income (for both day)

Entry Requirements: 16+, any under 18s accompanied by 21+ adult 1:1 ratio

Not far from Bristol, there is a village. This village belongs to the people who live in it and to those who lived in it hundreds of years ago. It belongs to England’s mysterious past and its confounding present.

It belongs to families dead for generations, and to those who have only recently moved here, such as the boy Lanny, and his mum and dad.

But it also belongs to Dead Papa Toothwort, who has woken from his slumber in the woods. Dead Papa Toothwort, who is listening to them all.

By the author of Sunday Times Bestseller, Grief is the Thing with Feathers, Max Porter’s spectral novel Lanny rocked the literary world in 2019. Described as “a joyously stirred cauldron of words”(The Guardian) that is “magically beguiling” (Financial Times), it intertwines reality and imagination to thrillingly eerie effect.

Adapted for the stage by award-winning West Country playwright Bea Roberts (And Then Come The Nightjars), and directed by Nancy Medina (The Beautiful Future Is Coming; A Good House; Choir Boy– Best Director, Black British Theatre Awards 2024) and with Puppet Place Resident Artist Izzy Bristow acting as the Shadow Puppet Consultant, this dark and powerful story of folklore, fable and the nature of belonging is the flagship production of BOV’s 260th year.
