Alive Activities

Alive Activities Alive is the UK’s leading charity enriching the lives of older people and their carers. We entertain but we are more than entertainers.

We provide fun and engaging activity sessions in care homes which include music, song, poetry and dance, exploring people’s life stories using iPads, sharing memories with objects from the past, art and film-making with local school children, multi-sensory work for people living with advanced dementia and, above all, giving older people purpose and meaning, as well as the chance to have some fun.

We're different to other activity providers because we enable older people to shape the content and direction of Alive! sessions, which include the use of new technology, guided reminiscence, creative, energising and physical activities. We engage older people in meaningful ways using a variety of tools and techniques tried and tested over the last 10 years.

I moustache you a question! 🥸 We had a lot of fun taking a closer look at Frans Hal's 'Laughing Cavalier' at Beech House yesterday.

Bringing one of history's most famous paintings to life, we discussed the story behind the portrait and took turns dressing up as the mystery man (stick-on 'staches and all!).

A huge thank you to Bristol Care Homes for having us and the wonderful residents of Beech House.

Give it up for everyone that joined our group walk on Saturday raising money for Alive! 🥳

We've raised over £2.4K so far for our Step Into May appeal: encouraging people to get active to help light up later life.

Taking on 1, 5 and 10-mile routes through Bristol, it was a wonderful chance to share stories about our work and take in the sights of our city (even if we weren't too fond of the hill at Ashton Court!).

A huge thank you to everyone that joined us and a special shout out to the folks at Good Miles and Walk Bristol for their kind support.

There's still time to donate, so please help us raise funds to support older people and their carers by donating to our JustGiving page.

Beach babies! 👶 Last week we enjoyed the cutest Lullaby Circle at Field House, dipping our toes in the sand.

Bringing the fun of the seaside to us, the Bristol Care Homes team did a brilliant job of creating a mini beach in their courtyard for our Lullaby Circle session with local mums and babies.

(We enjoyed our beach day before the heatwave, so the cold and rain made it feel even more like a typical British holiday!).

At Alive, we’ve been thinking of different ways to encourage the people we support to spend more time outside as part of our Step Into May fundraiser. You can find out more, and donate, here: https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/step-into-may-2026

We are devastated to learn of the sad passing of Emma Britton over the weekend. She was an incredible person - full of empathy, love and compassion, with such a wonderful sense of fun - and this came across in everything she did.

Emma was a huge advocate and friend of Alive. It all started in 2018 when Emma was the voice and face of the BBC Bristol Breakfast Show. Alive somehow became Radio Bristol’s Charity of the Year, which was absolutely huge for us. We worked together for 18 months, and Emma and the other presenters helped raise more than £30,000 for Alive.

Emma was the driving force behind so much of it - hosting fundraising events, taking on a Couch to 5K challenge which she absolutely smashed, and even interviewing a chicken live on air! There were so many brilliantly funny and engaging moments with her.

But more than anything, Emma had an extraordinary ability to connect with people. Whenever she attended our activity sessions, she immediately understood the difference that activity, connection and engagement can make to people living with dementia. Her empathy shone through, and she brought smiles wherever she went.

“Emma was an absolute star and her genuine love for people shone out both on and off the radio. She had a brilliant sense of humour and an incredible ability to connect with everyone she met. We are hugely grateful for everything Emma brought to the appeal."

"Personally, Emma really encouraged me to speak on the radio, and it was such a privilege to chat with her regularly. She will be so deeply missed by so many people.” Said Isobel Jones, CEO of Alive.

The world was a brighter place with Emma in it. Our thoughts and love are with all her family and friends.

Joining Alzheimer's Society in sharing stories this Dementia Action Week, we thought we'd share that of the lovely Winnie. ❤️

Married at 17 for 74 years, Winnie started attending our Dementia Meeting Centre just after the passing of her husband, Ed. She struggles with grief and gets very lonely.

She's always been incredible sociable, with a big family. But as her dementia progressed, she found it hard remembering places and people.

Since joining our Thursday group, Winnie found a brand new friendship group of other people living with dementia. Together they enjoy each other's company and support and they help her cope with her grief.

"It's like a family here. I can't wait to come each time."

She told us that Thursday is the absolute highlight of her week, where she can be with others and not sit on her own in her flat. In a recent hospital stay, she told the nurses she had to leave to get back to her club!

The Meeting Centre provides Winnie with an anchor point each week. Something to look forward to, a shoulder to cry on, a place to share her brilliant baking skills, and somewhere to dance (when Barry Manilow is playing!).
