Dené struggled with her mental health as a result of trauma, from a young age and battled with the triggers and stressors on a daily basis. As she grew older, life experiences and challenges meant that she was unable to heal and remained vulnerable. In August 2016 she sought help through the Adult Mental Health Team. She was assessed as medium to high risk of su***de. Dené did not get the help she
wanted and asked for, and 3 months later she was discharged. On the 21st February 2017 she fought her last battle. Dené ended the pain….the mental war….and took her own life. Just 3 months after she was discharged from AMHS community support. We believe had Dené got the help she needed, and asked for: consistent and regular support; help in understanding herself and tools for coping with her pain, self harm and suicidal urges, then she would still be here today. We know she battled hard, we know she wanted to live to raise her son and realise her ambition of becoming a psychotherapist. We also know that mental health services are massively overstretched and underfunded leading to longer than normal waiting times, even more so post covid-19. We decided to ‘build’ Nai’s House, to ensure that young adults could reach out for a different kind of support, but also to ensure Dené could continue to help people. Nai’s House primarily is about su***de prevention, young people are at the heart of what we do and our ultimate our aim is to contribute to a reduction in the numbers of death by su***de. We are not a clinical or medical service. Nai’s House is a mix of youth and therapeutic services that gives under 30's a safe place to be. Here they can easily access 1-2-1 support, counselling, holistic treatments (over 16’s only) and participate in a range of creative, physical, sensory, verbal and spiritual activities all aimed at helping to develop ways to improve emotional and mental well being. Nai’s House delivers mental health first aid and a range of su***de prevention and intervention training to empower and impart skills to the community with the aim of creating a su***de safer community, including safe spots, to ensure that anyone of any age in emotional or mental distress can easily access support from trained community members.
