Jonathan Pain has volunteered with the Night Light Winter Shelter in Basingstoke for the last two years. He is a trustee and treasurer of the charity that runs it, and he also manages the volunteer rotas, keeps everyone in touch about shifts, meals and training, and takes evening and overnight shifts, chatting with guests and playing board games.

The shelter provides vital warmth and shelter for dozens of people every winter, with volunteers giving up their spare time to ensure nobody is left out in the cold.

Jonathan says: “Volunteering repays you in different ways to paid work or doing things for your own benefit and I think that everyone should do it, even if just one shift of a couple of hours now and again.”

Meet Suzi, a woman who dedicates much of her free time to supporting some of the borough’s most vulnerable people.

By day she's a master cat groomer, but outside of work she's a Foodbank signposter, a Night Light Winter Shelter venue coordinator, and a regular pair of hands in the garden at The Dwelling Place.

Suzi’s own family has lived through addiction, estrangement and homelessness. That experience is exactly why she gives up her time to help others: “I volunteer because it makes a difference to people's lives... all searching for whatever their purpose is and to be seen and feel loved.”

Real Change starts with people like Suzi. Volunteer today, change a life tomorrow.

Emily first volunteered at the Basingstoke Night Light Winter Shelter in 2016, after hearing about it through her church. Nearly a decade on, she's done just about every job there: working as a venue coordinator, offering overnight cover, and cooking and serving food to guests.

She says: “By volunteering for the shelter, I can do something to make things better for people, to reduce suffering and offer support that can meaningfully improve someone's life.”
The shelter is entirely volunteer-run. Without people giving up their time, it simply wouldn’t be possible.

Real Change starts with people like Emily. Volunteer for Real Change: https://realchangebasingstoke.org.uk/get-involved/

James Mellors volunteers with The Camrose Centre and the Night Light Winter Shelter. He's been working for homeless projects since 2010, when his research into homeless communities for his Masters degree in Anthropology drove him to want to make a real and practical difference to those sleeping rough.

16 years later, he is still passionate about supporting those who need it most. “The first step is always the biggest”, James says, “”to step into the unknown and out of your comfort zone. Take a big leap, you won’t regret it.”

Today is World Homeless Day, and we're launching Volunteer for Real Change.

Across Basingstoke and Deane, local services support people who are homeless or at risk of losing their home. The Night Light Winter Shelter, The Camrose Centre, Citizens Advice Basingstoke, Basingstoke and Tadley Foodbank and many more rely on volunteers to keep going.

Throughout today we'll be introducing some of the people who give their time. They'll share how they got started, what they do, and what volunteering has given back to them.

There's a role for everyone. You could cook, chat, listen, give advice or help behind the scenes, and you can fit it around your life, whether that's one evening a month or a few hours a week. Training is provided, so you don't need any experience. If you're not sure where you'd fit, Basingstoke Voluntary Action can help you find the right role.

Volunteer today, change a life tomorrow.

Only two days to go until World Homeless Day!

The event this Saturday is a good time to think about the needs of people experiencing homelessness in our own communities.

Homelessness can take many forms. As well as people sleeping rough, it includes people sofa-surfing with friends, living in B&Bs or hostels, or staying in temporary accommodation with nowhere settled to call home. Many of them are people we pass every day without knowing what they're going through.

Here in Basingstoke and Deane, local organisations work all year round to support people who are homeless or at risk of losing their home.

Watch this space on Saturday to find out how you can be part of the change.

Since 2008, Camrose Centre for Homeless and Vulnerably Housed People has been Basingstoke's only day centre for people who are experiencing homelessness. It opens six days a week, offering hot food, a shower, clean clothes and a friendly, non-judgemental place to be.

For someone sleeping rough, being able to wash and change into clean clothes can make a huge difference to how they feel. Right now, the centre has completely run out of small and medium jogging bottoms and jeans.

If you have any to spare, please drop them into the centre at Glebe Hall, St Michael's Church, Church Square, Basingstoke RG21 7QW during any of these sessions:
🗓️ Monday 2pm to 4.30pm
🗓️ Tuesday 10am to 2pm
🗓️ Wednesday 11am to 1pm
🗓️ Thursday 10am to 2pm
🗓️ Friday 10am to 12.30pm
🗓️ Sunday 12 noon to 3pm

Thank you to everyone who came along to the Supported Housing Information Networking Event at Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council's Civic Offices yesterday. What a fantastic afternoon! 🌟

It was great to see so many local organisations there, including The Camrose Centre, Basingstoke Foodbank, Night Light Winter Shelter and Basingstoke Voluntary Action.

SHINE is all about helping professionals find out more about the housing and homelessness support available across Basingstoke and Deane, so they know who to turn to when someone needs help. Seeing so many people sharing knowledge and swapping contacts was exactly what we hoped for.

A big thank you to the Basingstoke and Deane Social Inclusion Partnership members for sharing their services, and to everyone who came along.

Next up is World Homeless Day on Saturday 10 October. Keep an eye on this page for what's happening locally. 🧡
