Today is the International Day of Charity 2026

Everyday we want to celebrate and thank you all for giving your time, money, energy, love, enthusiasm and support.

Even the smallest acts of kindness can create ripples that build and build, eventually turning into waves of positive impact in the community.

Today is National Grief Awareness Day.

Grief is something that we will all experience at some stage in our lives, yet many of us find it difficult or 'awkward' to talk about. Cruse Bereavement Support have put together some important reminders about grief on the following link -

www.cruse.org.uk/about/blog/national-grief-awareness-day/

Please reach out if you need support, two options are to speak to your GP, or you can call our local Cruse branch (North and Northeast Hampshire) on 0330 555012 .

♟️ One for all, and all for one! ❤️

Hello, beautiful community of chess players!

We’d love to ask for a little help.

We’ve been contacted by Basingstoke NeighbourCare, a local charity supporting older people in our community. They have a lovely gentleman living in Basingstoke who used to play chess many years ago and would love to get back to the game, but sadly, he doesn’t know anyone who plays.

He can’t easily get to our chess club, so we’re wondering if there’s anyone in our community who would be happy to visit him occasionally for a friendly game of chess and a chat. ♟️

It doesn’t have to be every week. He’s very open to whatever works. And who knows? It might be just as enjoyable for the volunteer as it is for him.

If you think you might be interested, please send us a message. There’s absolutely no obligation at this stage. The charity would arrange a DBS check at no cost to the volunteer and would also cover mileage for the journey there and back.

Sometimes, a chessboard is more than just a chessboard. It can bring two people together, create a friendship and make someone’s week a little brighter. ❤️

Could you be the person to make the first move? ♟️

Please share this post with anyone in Basingstoke who might be willing to be part of this story.

We love this post made by Cllr Val Elliott, one of our volunteer drivers (picture added by us) -

Today I was out and about as a volunteer for Basingstoke Neighbourcare.🚗
I love giving my time to listen to our passengers and make sure they can get to the medical appointments and activities they need.

On these journeys I hear the most wonderful stories 🌳 rural life before Basingstoke expansion, the awe of moving from London to somewhere so green, and how families have grown and put down roots in our town over the years.
I also love our little "Wizard of Oz" walk together, arm in arm, on the way in 🌈

It's such a rewarding way to spend time, and I'd really encourage anyone thinking about it to look into volunteering with one of our fabulous charities across the borough. You never know whose day you might make 😊
