The Hugo Burge Foundation is an independent charity supporting creativity across the United Kingdom. Creativity has the power to transform the lives of individuals and communities. Established in 2024, the Hugo Burge Foundation is dedicated to nourishing and inspiring creativity in every single one of us, young and old. We run courses, host events, offer awards and provide opportunities to anyone wanting to enrich their lives and surroundings with art, beauty and the magic of making. We provide affordable workspaces for artists, makers and creative professionals in the Scottish Borders, and offer funded and self-funded residencies throughout the year. We welcome art-lovers, schools and community groups to visit our beautiful walled garden and restored glasshouses on the Marchmont Estate.

We love it when a plan comes together! Thanks to Borders Music Festival for the free tickets, SBC Instrumental Music Service for organising and the brilliant Mrs Brown of Earlston High School for getting 20 students onto the HBF fun bus to experience a spellbinding concert of musical mastery.

Open Studios update 📣
Sunday is a very exciting day for the Scottish Borders as the Tour of Britain takes over the roads. The extent of the closures is far greater than anticipated and we don’t want our visitors getting stuck. So it’s a Super Studios Saturday! We look forward to seeing you then and have made extra tickets available. Sunday will be closed.

Open Studios - exhibition announcement 📣
We welcome three of our individual grant recipients from 2025 to show work in our Squash Court Studio.

At the invitation of our Creative Director James Fox Erlend Tait Pascal Miehe and Samantha Clark will share a joint exhibition of their work. James will host a Q&A with the artists on both Saturday and Sunday.

We are delighted that three of our silversmiths from Marchmont Silversmithing Workshop will be showing their incredible pieces at the Goldsmiths’ Fair in London.

From 22 September to 4 October, Goldsmiths’ Fair brings together 138 of the UK’s leading contemporary jewellers and silversmiths at Goldsmiths’ Hall, celebrating the breadth and depth of talent working in precious metals today.

If you are in London, it’s well worth a visit to discover new collections, meet makers and experience the incredible range of contemporary precious metalwork being created across the UK today.

Thank you to everyone who has joined us in the Tower, the Squash Court, the Hobbit Pods and the Common Room. We can’t wait to get together to celebrate HBF residencies. Hugo could never have imagined there would be so many of you! It’s amazing. Truly.
