WFP is supporting emergency response efforts in the Federated States of Micronesia following Typhoon Sinlaku by providing satellite connectivity to patrol vessels operating in remote outer islands with no communication access.

This support ensures that response teams can maintain critical contact while assessing needs and delivering assistance in some of the most isolated areas.

Connectivity has been provided to two key maritime missions:
FSS Tosiwo Nakayama – Northwest Islands
FSS Betwel Henry – Mortlocks Islands

Both missions include representatives from Chuuk State, the United Nations, and donor partners, working together to coordinate response efforts and reach affected communities.

WFP remains committed to strengthening emergency communications to support timely, coordinated humanitarian action across the Pacific.

WFP Pacific is on the ground in Chuuk State, Federated States of Micronesia, supporting the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Emergency Management and the Disaster Coordination Office (DCO) in ongoing response and recovery efforts following Typhoon Sinlaku.

Our team is leading damage assessments of the national radio network and providing critical satellite communications support to government response operations, particularly in the areas of Chuuk most impacted by the typhoon.

Strong coordination and reliable communications are essential to reach affected communities and support response and recovery efforts.

Yesterday, we were honoured to host our partners and donors for a visitation to the Pacific Logistics Response Team (LRT) training currently underway.

The visit provided an opportunity to walk our partners through the full LRT concept, its purpose in strengthening emergency logistics capacity in the Pacific, and the importance of coordinated, ready-to-deploy logistics response during disasters.

Our partners also experienced a tour of the live simulation, where participants are immersed in a realistic emergency response environment - working under pressure, solving complex logistics challenges, and coordinating with multiple actors in field‑like conditions.

We sincerely thank our donors and partners for taking the time to engage with the training and for their continued support in strengthening preparedness and response capacity across the Pacific.

A few days into the first ever Logistics Response Team (LRT) training in the Pacific, participants are already deep into demanding, real-life simulation exercises designed to mirror the complex realities of emergency response in the Pacific.

Working under field-like conditions logistics professionals are being put to the test. The simulations replicate high-pressure disaster scenarios where speed, coordination and problem-solving are critical to delivering life-saving assistance.

Participants are responding as part of inter-agency Logistics Response Teams, strengthening technical, leadership and coordination skills while learning how to overcome bottlenecks such as access constraints, stakeholder coordination and rapidly changing operational environments.

This week, logistics professionals from across the Pacific and Timor-Leste have come together to strengthen preparedness for emergency response.

Over the coming days, participants will:

🤝 Learn how governments, humanitarian partners, and the private sector work together during emergencies
⛺ Take part in an intensive, real‑time emergency simulation - working in field‑like conditions with limited connectivity
🚢 Tackle realistic challenges involving transport, customs, coordination, and rapid decision‑making

This WFP led Global Logistics Cluster (GLC) training is hosted by the government of Fiji and is the first ever LRT in the Pacific.

🌏 WFP Pacific Annual Country Report 2025 is now published.

In a year marked by climate shocks, economic pressure and growing food insecurity, WFP strengthened Pacific-led systems to help communities prepare for, withstand and recover from crises.

Key highlights from 2025 include:
✅ Technical support to government staff across the Pacific, strengthening national preparedness and response systems
✅ Expanded anticipatory action and shock-responsive social protection, including readiness to reach up people through early cash assistance
✅ Improved financial preparedness for disasters, increasing sovereign climate insurance coverage
✅ New evidence on affordability of healthy diets, showing over 40% of households in Samoa cannot afford a nutritious diet
✅ Strengthened humanitarian logistics and emergency telecommunications

WFP in partnership with the Pacific Community (SPC), through its Pacific Islands Emergency Management Alliance (PIEMA), have signed a Letter of Agreement to develop the Pacific’s first accredited training programme in humanitarian supply chain and logistics, aiming to build a regional cadre of professionals who can move aid faster when disasters strike.

The programme modules are designed to give emergency management professionals practical skills in logistics coordination, supply chain management and humanitarian response and form part of WFP and SPC’s joint work to enhance systems and capabilities for preparedness and response in the Pacific.

WFP and PIEMA will lead the development and accreditation of the modules, train instructors and coordinate outreach to learners across the region.

WFP Pacific Country Director ad interim Emma Conlan met with Ms. Karen Mapusua, Acting Deputy Director-General of the Pacific-Community-SPC this week.

The discussion reaffirmed the strong collaboration between WFP and SPC, particularly in strengthening humanitarian supply chain systems, food security and nutrition, the importance of data to help make informed decisions, and supporting Pacific communities facing increasing climate and disaster risks.

WFP remains committed to working alongside SPC and regional partners to support a safer, stronger, and more resilient Blue Pacific.

WFP Pacific Country Director ad interim Emma Conlan met with H.E. Greg Andrews, New Zealand High Commissioner to Fiji, to discuss shared priorities and deepen collaboration in support of communities across the Pacific.

The discussion highlighted strong alignment between New Zealand’s development priorities and WFP’s work in the region - from strengthening food security and expanding emergency telecommunications, to supporting nutrition initiatives, enhancing resilience, and building national capacities to prepare for and respond to disasters.

Together, we remain committed to ensuring Pacific communities are better equipped to anticipate, withstand, and recover from shocks.
