On this Day in 2015, Andreas Mogensen became the first Dane to go to space. Nearly 8 years later, on 25th of August 2023, he returned to space for the second time, becoming the first European astronaut to pilot a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft.

Aluminium or steel is not a materials question. It is a question about who is holding the welding torch.

Aluminium saves mass, and mass is altitude, so on paper it wins.

Welding it to flight standard is a specialist skill, and a bad weld in aluminium is much less forgiving than a bad weld in steel.

Steel is heavier and it costs you performance, but it can be worked, welded and repaired in a volunteer workshop on a Thursday evening.

Material choice is bounded by the joining process available to a volunteer workshop, not by what the datasheet permits.

Mass is a currencyn and so is buildability, and we spend both.

Next week, Copenhagen hosts the global space industry.

Space for Inspiration 2026 is ESA's flagship conference on the commercial opportunities opening up in microgravity and the lunar economy, and it runs on 1 and 2 September, a few kilometres from our workshop. Last year's edition put NASA, JAXA, UNOOSA, Blue Origin, Airbus and Thales Alenia Space in the same room.

Not bad for a small country. Conferences like this land where there is something worth coming for, and a lot of Danish companies, labs and workshops, ours included, have spent years building that. Good work by ESA BIC Denmark for bringing it home.

We are not going to orbit. That is not a shortcut, and we should be honest about what it is.

Orbit is not about height, it is about speed, and it takes something like 25 times the energy of going straight up and coming straight back down.

What we are doing is crossing the line into space and then getting a person back through the atmosphere and out of the Baltic alive.

The crew problems do not get easier just because the trajectory does: pressure, g-loads, abort, parachutes and recovery are all still ours.

You can move propellant with pressure or with a pump. Both answers are wrong in different ways.

Pressure feeding has almost no moving parts, which is exactly what you want when the people building it have day jobs.

The cost is that the tanks have to hold that pressure, so they get heavy, and heavy tanks eat your altitude.

Pumps fix the mass problem and hand you a turbopump instead, which is one of the hardest machines a small team can attempt.

A rocket is mostly fuel with a thin metal skin wrapped around it.
Roughly nine tenths of what stands on the pad is propellant.
The structure, the engine, the avionics and the payload share what is left.
That is why mass is the only currency in this building. Add a kilo anywhere and you pay for it everywhere.

Everything we design is an argument about mass.

The sun is not round in this photo.
Zoom in and you will see a crescent, because around 80% of it was behind the moon at 20:12 on 12 August, nine minutes after a maximum of 83.5%. Then the sun set while it was still eclipsed, and took the rest of the show down with it.
Which leaves a question open, and we are an organisation that closes open questions.

CREW: Randy, our crash test dummy, who has flown before.
OBJECTIVE: Is the sun round or flat?
LAUNCH WINDOW: At night, so that we avoid the heat.
STATUS: We have thought about this a lot.

In slightly more serious news, we are the world's only crewed amateur space program, with 60+ volunteers and zero employees, and everything we build is funded by people giving 15 EUR a month - which is, technically, also the funding model for this mission.
