WAFA - Water Air Food Awards 🌿Founded 2008 | Global awards platform celebrating and amplifying water, air, food & climate innovations developed by local Silent Heroes worldwide🌍

Since 2008, WAFA's mission is to acknowledge, certify and promote sustainable solutions that secure water, clean air and food for all. WAFA is a non-profit working on Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs), it encourages people all over the world thriving hard to work on sustainable solutions and bringing change. It honours them by giving awards and grants; the main award categories are food, wat

er, air(environment). The criterion to qualify for these awards is two years of demonstrated work and an impact that can differentiate before and after situations. In a yearly call for applications, we identify sustainability heroes and share their stories across multiple platforms, aiming for global reach. We celebrate them in a vibrant Awards' event by giving them the prominence they deserve. The recognition they earn through WAFA helps them to evolve, grow and gather support to expand their creativity.

From emergency relief to long-term resilience.

In Zambia’s Kazungula District, drought and the impact of COVID-19 left thousands of families facing food insecurity and uncertainty. Through clean water access, solar-powered systems, and support for local food production, The Butterfly Tree helped communities move beyond survival and toward sustainability.

This 2023 WAFA Awards Food Finalist shows how combining immediate support with long-term solutions can strengthen entire communities and create lasting change.

When Water Flows Uphill

In the hills of Negros Occidental in the Philippines, accessing water once meant hours of walking and carrying heavy containers uphill every day. For many families, this daily task limited time for school, work, and farming.

The Alternative Indigenous Development Foundation (AIDFI), 2023 Winner for the Water Category, introduced a simple but powerful solution: hydraulic ram pumps that move water uphill using only the energy of flowing water. By working closely with communities and training local technicians, the initiative created a system that communities can manage and sustain themselves.

Today, water flows where it was once out of reach, bringing better health, new opportunities, and dignity to communities across the region.

Transforming Water Access and Community Health

In many rural communities in Cambodia, access to clean water has long been a daily struggle. Unsafe water sources and poor sanitation led to widespread waterborne diseases, causing children to miss school and adults to lose valuable work opportunities.

Metamorphic International, a Water Finalist at the Wafa Awards 2023, tackled this challenge through a community-driven approach. By combining infrastructure, education, and local empowerment, Metamorphic International has helped break the cycle of illness and poverty, proving that sustainable, community-led solutions can create lasting change.
