Happy anniversary to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms!

The Charter came into force on April 17, 1982, when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II signed the Proclamation of the Constitution Act, 1982.

This foundational document has played an important role in addressing inequality and helping define the values shared by Canadians. The Charter is intended to ensure that all people in Canada can live free from discrimination of any kind.

Section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982 recognizes and affirms the existing rights of Indigenous peoples (ancestral and treaty rights), as referenced in section 25 of the Charter.
