James Bay Community Project James Bay Community Project (JBCP) is a community organization with a long history of actively serving James Bay and the surrounding neighbourhoods.

James Bay Community Project is a non-profit community organization helping seniors, youth and families by providing a variety of programs, community support and volunteer services. We operate as a non-profit, charitable society, with a volunteer board of directors. We offer community and volunteer services for families, youth and seniors. We live and work on the traditional lands of the L'kwungen speaking peoples of the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations.

Volunteers Needed!

Volunteers are at the heart of the James Bay Community Project. We simply wouldn’t be able to provide many of our services without the time, care, and support of our amazing volunteers.

We’re currently looking for help with:

🚗Transportation to medical appointments
Help isolated seniors get to and from much-needed medical appointments safely and comfortably. A reliable ride and a friendly face can make a real difference in someone’s day.

🍲Soup making on Thursdays
Spend a fun couple of hours in our cozy kitchen making a pot of soup for seniors to enjoy. This is a relaxed, self-directed role with plenty of support available.

We LOVE books in the Family Centre! Thanks to a generous donation from the Times Colonist Literacy Fund, we are able to purchase the most wonderful children’s books every year. Earlier this year, Canadians completed the 2026 Census. While we wait for the results, the 2021 Census already tells an important story about the unique community we serve.

James Bay is home to a significantly larger proportion of seniors than many other parts of Victoria, with a median age nearly 30% higher than the citywide average. Many have lived in the neighbourhood for decades and hope to continue aging safely and independently in their own homes, remaining connected to the community they love for as long as possible.

At the other end of the age spectrum, new parents, families, and youth can experience isolation and disconnection, especially in a neighbourhood like ours, with relatively few families with children. In 2021, James Bay had approximately 12,640 residents, yet fewer than 700 families with children.

In this context, community spaces and programs become far more than activities — they become lifelines. Initiatives that reduce isolation, support well-being, and bring generations together are more important than ever, helping seniors remain connected to the neighbourhood they love while ensuring that families and youth feel welcome, supported, and part of a caring community.

Tea and Mortality: What Will We Talk About?

Last week, we announced Tea and Mortality — our own Death Café–style group facilitated by local death doula Karla Kerr. We welcome adults of all ages for gentle, open conversations about death and dying.

To give you a better idea of what to expect, Karla has suggested some possible discussion topics:
– The Great Taboo: Why are we so afraid to talk about the D word — death?
– What does dying well mean to you?
– Environmental options after death
– Grief before someone dies
– The funerals we remember — the good and the bad
– How to talk to family about end-of-life planning
– Death doula — what’s that?

These are just starting points — everyone is warmly invited to suggest other topics as well!

We can’t wait to begin. If you haven’t registered yet, there’s still time:

Children have an opportunity to explore their creativity in the Family Resource Centre, and one of the ways they express it is through painting. Our easel is always set up and ready to go. For young kids, it’s all about the process, and it’s exciting to add bright colour to paper. It’s fun to see how colours change when you put them on top of each other too!

And, as you might remember, we recently decided to turn some of this beautiful toddler artwork into art cards. You can still purchase them at our reception, and, as of recently, at our Community Closet thrift store too. All proceeds from sales go directly to support our programs. Many of us have questions, thoughts, fears, experiences, or simply curiosity about death and dying, but few opportunities to talk about them openly.

Starting September 8, we warmly invite you to join our Tea and Mortality group for gentle conversations about death and dying. Facilitated by local death doula Karla Kerr, this informal gathering, widely known as a "death cafe", offers a welcoming space to explore conversations about death and what it means to live well.

Participants are welcome to listen, share, ask questions, or simply be present.

We’ll start with a trial series of six biweekly sessions, from September 8 to November 17, and see how it goes.

Tuesdays, 1:00–2:30 pm, starting September 8, every two weeks

We can’t be thankful enough to our volunteers for all the hard work and care they give to our participants and our community.

Recently, we had to say goodbye to an amazing volunteer family team. Jennifer, Beth, and Chloe were indulging our seniors with delicious soups and other homemade meals at our Connections Luncheon. At only 13, Chloe was our youngest volunteer. And their husband and dad Jamie also volunteered in our drive program, and they did holiday hamper deliveries.

All the very best to you in your new home! We miss you already, and we can’t wait for you to come back and visit us and our beautiful James Bay again.

Last year, James Bay Community Project turned 50. Many years ago, our lobby apparently looked very different, and old legends say (and some folks confirm) that it even had a library.

Nowadays, we have a bookshelf with a carefully selected collection of books of all kinds, donated by our wonderful neighbours, both local businesses and community members.

And you can find yourself a good read for a suggested donation of just $2 for a paperback or $3 for a hardcover.

Best of all, one little book purchase does several good things at once: you give a pre-loved book a new home, get something good to read, and support your neighbourhood, as all proceeds go directly toward JBCP programs for families with young children, seniors, and the wider community.

So next time you’re in our lobby, have a look at the bookshelf!
