Victoria Therapeutic Riding Association Please visit www.vtra.ca for more information.

VTRA is a registered charity and non-profit organization that provides therapeutic horseback riding and related equine-assisted activities for those with diverse abilities. VTRA has been operating since 1982, when it was started by a small and extremely dedicated group of visionaries who wanted to bring the proven benefits of equine assisted activities to our community. Finding a permanent home wa

s a challenge for the program in the early years; in 2009 VTRA was fortunate to be able to set up long term operations its’ current location. Its history demonstrates growth from a small, volunteer-only organization to a well-structured not-for-profit agency with an employed staff, consisting of highly trained and experienced therapeutic riding professionals. There is a large pool of committed volunteers who provide most of our program services, working as horse handlers, sidewalkers, assistant instructors, grooms, and helpers in the clubhouse. The scope of our activities and the degree of organization have increased over the years, resulting in a substantial enhancement of levels of service and efficacy of our programs.

🖐️👂👃👁️Engaging the Senses With Horses

From the texture of grooming tools to the sounds of the barn and the movement of riding, horses engage multiple senses at once.

These experiences can support sensory awareness and comfort in individuals with diverse sensory needs.

At VTRA, sensory input from equine activities is naturally integrated and purposeful.

💕Trust as a Two‑Way Relationship

Horses respond best when they feel safe, respected, and understood.
This teaches participants the importance of consistency, calm leadership, and mutual respect.

At VTRA, trust develops through shared experiences, offering valuable lessons in connection and relationship‑building.

🌟Step by Step: A Participant's Journey at VTRA🌟

For their final session together, Leslie and Sadie took on an exciting challenge by working through a pattern and adding a timed element to push their skills even further, something Leslie absolutely loves!

At the start of the lesson, Louise spent time reviewing proper hand position and practicing steering techniques with Leslie, setting a strong foundation for the session. Then it was game on as Leslie and Sadie tackled the pattern. It was wonderful to see them having so much fun while applying everything they’ve learned over the past 10 weeks.

A huge thank you goes out to our incredible volunteers, Anne, Devin, Joan, and Karen, for their ongoing support and dedication throughout Leslie’s journey. Your involvement made a meaningful difference.

We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Louise, our cart driving instructor, for her kindness, professionalism, and patience every step of the way.

And finally, this program wouldn’t be possible without our amazing Clydesdale, Sadie. This was her very first term, and she truly shone. While there is still more for her to learn, her willingness and eagerness to do well are both impressive and heartwarming.

Thank you as well to everyone who followed along and cheered Leslie on each week, we appreciate your support! We’ll be back in September when our regular programs resume, but for now, we’re heading into camp prep mode.
