With some mixed emotions, we are happy to report that 3 out of 5 unwanted bunnies (that we know of) were rescued from Merritt before the impending evacuation alert is put in place. The 4 babies have been running loose in the neighbourhood at risk of being hurt by local dogs, wildlife, and cars. With the progression of the nearby wildfire, they now risked abandonment in the event of an evacuation.
A big thank you to our amazing supporter Barb Shoji who discovered these bunnies and caught the first one. Without her notifying us about them, we would not have been able to help at all.
We were very close to catching the last little baby bun, another white lionhead, but in the end he scurried back onto fenced, private property that could not be accessed.
Another adult bun did not stray from that property at all, so we are hopeful we will be contacted by the owner and the rest of the bunnies will be surrendered.
As much as we wanted to take all of these bunnies into our care, we simply do not have the space, in shelter or in foster. So two were transfered to a shelter in the Interior, with space. Although we are immensely thankful for the many people willing to help bunnies in need of temporary relocation, the only way for us to take in and help more bunnies is to have more long term foster homes or adoptive homes available.
