Meet Dianne and Ken Griffith.

One family’s unwavering commitment to changing how breast cancer is detected and treated.

Laurie Rix and the Rix Family Foundation’s longstanding partnership with BC Cancer is helping researchers develop a blood test that can detect trace fragments of cancer left behind after treatment, sometimes before they’re visible any other way.

Led by Dr. Sam Aparicio, the research reads previously hidden chemical modifications in DNA, often called the “dark genome,” to build precise fingerprints of tumour DNA in a patient’s blood sample. For people with aggressive cancers like triple-negative breast cancer, this work could mean detecting potential recurrence earlier and identifying, with more confidence than ever before, who needs further treatment and who doesn’t.

Over their decades-long partnership with BC Cancer and the BC Cancer Foundation, the Rix family has invested almost $12 million to change how cancer is understood, treated and detected.

Canada's first CAR-T clinical trial was developed and delivered right here in B.C.

CAR-T is an innovative immunotherapy that uses a person's own immune cells to target cancer, and it's opening up new treatment options for people with blood cancers.

Did you know that a cancer treatment machine can create art?

As BC Cancer accelerates innovations in patient care, older equipment is retired to make room for advanced new technologies. Donor support has been a driving force behind the Vancouver Technology Transformation campaign, bringing cutting-edge technology to the front lines of cancer care. From enhanced imaging to more precise treatments, these advancements are helping make care more accurate, effective and personalized for every patient.

Before this linear accelerator (LINAC) was decommissioned, BC Cancer – Vancouver staff had some fun turning physics into art. The result? A unique piece that captures intricate electron trajectories frozen in acrylic. Innovation, impact and a little creativity along the way!

Right now, almost 400 cancer clinical trials are underway across B.C., giving people access to some of the newest treatments available.

Your donations helped launch BC Cancer's first clinical trial in CAR T-cell therapy, where doctors use a patient's own immune cells to target cancer. Since then, a second trial has opened to reach more blood cancer patients, including kids, and researchers are working on bringing this same approach to solid tumours like ovarian and pancreatic cancer.

When Robin Smith was diagnosed with cancer in 2012, his care team recommended a watch-and-wait approach. And for over a decade, Robin kept living his life fully.

When he needed treatment last fall, the chemotherapy he received didn’t exist when he was first diagnosed. In just ten years, advances in research had changed what was possible for patients like Robin.

Robin has since included BC Cancer Foundation in his will. “Think about the people who have been part of your life and had an impact,” he says. “For me, BC Cancer is one of those places.”

When Allan Collings and Hilary Stevens gave to BC Cancer years ago, their support went toward leukemia research. This time, their $1 million matching gift has helped to open a state-of-the-art lab.

The Collings Stevens Medicinal Chemistry Laboratory gives BC Cancer researchers the tools to design, build and refine the molecules that could become tomorrow's cancer treatments, work that used to depend on outside partners.

It's part of a $3 million campaign backed by more than 5,000 donors, and it means BC Cancer scientists can now take a discovery from an idea on paper to a tested compound without ever leaving the building.

Allan and Hilary say it best: breakthrough treatments don't happen by chance, they're built through sustained investment in the right people, tools and infrastructure.

Moira Izatt spent 20 years teaching English in Japan before coming home to B.C. Now she tends a garden of Japanese irises in Ladner, and she credits your support with giving her the time to enjoy it.

After a Stage 3 lung cancer diagnosis in 2019, Moira went through six weeks of radiation, chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Today she's on a targeted drug therapy that is stopping the growth and spread of her disease. This treatment was made possible because a biopsy revealed the exact gene mutation driving her disease, and researchers had already spent years figuring out how to treat it.

That's the kind of research your donations fund. Not just treatment for the patients here today, but breakthroughs for those who haven't been diagnosed yet.

Congratulations to Women in Tech Canada BC on their Summer Fundraising Gala at The Vancouver Club, celebrating leaders in their industries. Thanks to everyone in the room, the event raised $5,000 for the BC Cancer Foundation.

A highlight of the evening: Dr. Intan Schrader, co-director of BC Cancer's Hereditary Cancer Program, shared how her team developed POAga — a world-first genomic technology that can determine, from a single blood sample, which side of a family carries a cancer-causing gene mutation with 98% accuracy.

Her work is a powerful example of what's possible when technology and determination meet — the same forces driving BC Cancer Foundation's Technology Transformation campaign. That $50M initiative is bringing first-in-Canada scanning technologies to B.C., including a Photon Counting CT scanner, a Next-Generation PET/CT and a Contrast Enhanced Mammography.

Two causes, one belief: when women lead, and we invest in their bold ideas, we transform outcomes in tech and in cancer care.
