When a tumour is in the lungs, liver or pancreas, it doesn't sit still. It moves every time a patient breathes. That's one of the hardest challenges in radiation therapy, and it's exactly what BC Cancer – Vancouver's newest piece of equipment was built to solve.
The new Accuray Radixact linear accelerator (LINAC) started treating patients this July. It's the first of its kind in B.C., and it uses built-in imaging to track a tumour in real time, so treatment stays precisely on target no matter how the body shifts.
Your donations helped bring this technology to B.C.
The BC Cancer Foundation fully funded the purchase as part of the $50 million Vancouver Technology Transformation campaign, alongside support from the Ministry of Infrastructure.
