Today we tabled two proposals. U-2 Recognition establishes the legal and collaborative framework for good faith bargaining, which recognises the members in our bargaining unit.

Proposal U-3, Employee/Employer Relations Committee creates a joint provincial committee that represents both parties - to address common issues that arise during the life of this Collective Agreement and make recommendations for future bargaining rounds.

It's been quite the week - as members from our new PT/SL Unit participated in the Canadian Labour Congress, our first member-lead PT/SL Faculty Divisional, and ongoing bargaining activities.

This Divisional saw the collaborative process of our members making our first by-laws, the election of our Precarious Workers Committee, presentations from our other CAAT units' leadership, and a continued discussion on what matters most to our members as we continue to bargain for a fair, first collective agreement.

During this Divisional, we heard from our diverse members about the barriers and systemic issues they experience in their college workplaces. Despite the variety of hardships experienced, members in attendance were vocal about raising the floor for all college workers, improving the quality of education for our students, and organising together (across Locals and divisions) to .

One thing became clear for all units - we all feel precarious in the jobs we are passionate about and the difficulty that it creates in teaching/supporting our students. As wall-to-wall CAAT, faculty and support staff (part-time & full-time) stand in solidarity against the dismantling of our public college system and will fight for the community colleges our communities deserve.

As Day 3 with the CEC comes to a close, the PT Faculty Bargaining Team tabled the first proposal - not only of this bargaining round, but the first for this unit ever!

Proposal U1 invites the colleges to collaboratively approach the creation of our first ever collective agreement through a proactive, equity-focused lens that addresses past and present systemic issues.

🧵 Yesterday, the Ford government announced their decision to put Conestoga College under a government-appointed administrator – setting dangerous precedent for local democracy, instead of greater transparency and accountability in college governance structures.

“Instead of a leadership team accountable to students, parents, and staff, we get a one-person Board of Governors – setting dangerous precedent and repeating the mistakes which got us here."

"Tibbits is exactly the kind of opportunist one can expect when Ford starves the college system of public funding and leaves unaccountable leaders to their own devices.”

“Ford’s government is only trying to look like the hero now because the extent to which they have looked the other way is coming to light – including a $3 million payout for Tibbits, the so-called ‘problem’ as he goes out the door."

"That payout should go back into the pockets of students and the hundreds of workers already walked out.”

In their release yesterday, the Ministry of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security (MCURES) said the decision came following an extensive audit uncovering “egregious financial decisions which lacked appropriate oversight” – something that the union has decried for years.

“If we are going to rebuild Conestoga College as a responsible public institution, the results of that audit need to be made publicly available immediately."

“Full transparency must be provided without delay to restore community trust. Anything less will look like the Ministry is trying to sweep this mess under the rug after waiting far too long to take action.”

“This announcement needs to be evaluated in the context of not just what Ford says, but what he does. The track record shows Ford’s government legislating away transparency and eroding community control."

"They rammed through a law to shield their records from scrutiny, and imposed supervision of public school boards to distract from chronic underfunding.”

“The solution isn’t government overreach. The solution is adequate public funding for education and ensuring that colleges serve the communities they were designed to support.”

On May 5, OPSEU/SEFPO commemorates Red Dress Day, the National Day of Awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People ( ).

Red Dress Day is a solemn day of remembrance and action in solidarity with victims, survivors, and their families.

The hanging red dress is a powerful symbol of loss inspired by Métis artist Jaime Black's REDress Project, initiated to raise awareness and attention to the devastating numbers of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in Canada.

We call upon the federal and provincial governments to act upon the final report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

May 1 is International Workers’ Day, also known as May Day, when millions of workers around the world take to the streets and organize in their workplaces to demonstrate our collective strength.

This May Day, OPSEU/SEFPO commemorates the historic sacrifices made by our trade union predecessors and recommits to carry forward working-class struggles for justice by ensuring that no one is left behind.
