We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a Local 416 member from the Solid Waste Unit earlier today.

On behalf of Local 416 and all our members, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the worker who lost his life while on the job.

Local 416 is committed to working closely with the Ministry of Labour, investigators, police, and the City of Toronto to understand what happened.

We have reached out to the family to offer our support. Our thoughts remain with the family, their loved ones, and all Solid Waste Management colleagues during this
difficult time.

We will share further information as it becomes available.

The LMDC joins with longtime affiliates Hamilton & District Labour Council, CUPE 3903 and others in demanding the immediate release of Chris Smalls. A founding member and former president of the Amazon Labor Union, Smalls was seized along with other solidarity activists by forces of the zionist entity when their humanitarian aid vessel, the Handala, was sailing in international waters off the coast of Palestine. We are outraged but not surprised to learn that Smalls, the only Black person on board, was subjected to more brutality than the others.

The LMDC is proud to have been endorsed by Brother Smalls and can do no better than to repeat his words,

"People have to understand that unions have a responsibility to protect, to be the shield for the working class. And that doesn't exclude the Palestinian people... an injury to one is an injury to all"

Hello Members and Supporters of the Labour May Day Committee,

Tomorrow is our big day! Much appreciation to the unions and other supporting organizations spreading the word. We hope to have a big turnout for a militant May Day!

There is a chance of a bit of rain tomorrow, but we are prepared! We will have two canopies and hundreds of ponchos if needed. We ask contingents to arrive ready to rally and march, rain or shine!

We begin our set up tomorrow at 11 am, so any volunteers coming out to help with that would be appreciated! Like two years ago, there is a cultural event booked for Nathan Phillips Square proper this year, so we will set up just south of the square on Queen Street near Bay. As our numbers grow, we will take the street and make sure we have all the space we need.

Our official program will start at 1 pm, but we want all contingents, whether trade unions, socialist organizations, or national liberation supporters, to arrive at Nathan Phillips Square at 12:30 pm or earlier! Come gather starting at noon to distribute your leaflets, set up your tables and canopies, connect with other contingents, and enjoy the music of Union Thugs, which will begin at 12:30 pm!

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out

In sol,

Danny T., LMDC Chair

STATEMENT BY THE DEMOCRATIC FRONT FOR THE LIBERATION OF PALESTINE

* * *

WORKERS AND RISING PEOPLES OF THE WORLD: UNITE IN CONFRONTING ISRAELI FASCISM AND IN SUPPORT OF OUR PEOPLE'S STEADFASTNESS AND RESISTANCE

■ On May 1, International Workers' Day, the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine issued an appeal to the workers and rising peoples of the world, to the free and democratic forces, and to international justice to unite in the face of Israeli fascism, and to support and back our people and their valiant resistance, in the face of the war of genocide, ethnic cleansing, starvation, and the elimination of all manifestations of life, and in defense of our legitimate national rights to freedom, self-determination, independence, and the right to return to the homes and properties from which our refugees were displaced.

The Democratic Front said: The Israeli occupation has gone so far in its war against Palestinian workers that it has destroyed all job opportunities and sources of livelihood in the Gaza Strip, turning our workers and their families into homeless people in camps after their homes, residences, farms and business centers were destroyed. They depend on meager food aid, amid a severe lack of medicine and the disruption of schools and hospitals, which threatens the future of their children and the health of their women, especially pregnant women.

The Democratic Front added: As for the West Bank, the occupation has closed the doors of work to our workers, under policies that have led to the destruction of the foundations of building a national economy that provides local job opportunities for workers. Under these policies, they have been forced to work in Israeli projects, facing unjust laws that trample their social and human rights, and turning them into mere 'herds' of work outside of humanitarian and union standards, and outside of all the standards of justice that workers deserve.

The Democratic Front stressed that it is no longer a secret that what the Israeli occupation is doing does not stop at destroying the Palestinian labor force through killing, siege, and starvation. It does not hide its diabolical goals of displacing our people's workers and their families from their land, turning them into homeless people across the globe. It tries to cover this up with measures whose aims, objectives, and backgrounds are exposed.

The Democratic Front called on the workers of the world, its oppressed and rising peoples, the free peoples and the world's powers, to make May 1st a day for the workers of Palestine, and to support and back them, including by demanding an immediate end to the barbaric war on our people in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including Jerusalem, the capital of the State of Palestine, and to open the crossings, allow the flow of food and medical aid and shelter, transfer critical cases of the wounded and sick abroad, restore the infrastructure to provide electricity and clean water, and operate wastewater treatment plants.

The Democratic Front said: 'International Workers Day is a very important occasion, through which our people renew their unity on the ground as one people throughout the world, in confronting the single enemy and defending their rights as expressed by the PLO, the sole legitimate representative, through its national program and declaration of independence.'

In this context, and based on the importance of the unity of the people, their cause, their rights, and the unity of their national institutions, the Democratic Front reaffirms the necessity of responsible national action to stop the exacerbation of the rift in the national situation, which the Central Council has deepened with its preparations based on individualism, and its outcomes that are contrary to common denominators, as expressed by the stages of the national dialogue, the last of which is the 'Beijing Dialogue.' This requires immediate action to launch a comprehensive national dialogue at the highest levels, in which everyone participates to address the major issues of disagreement, and to draw up a comprehensive national plan that unifies and frames the national effort in the field, which constitutes a step on the path to rebuilding our political system and unifying its institutions, and to crown this by calling for a new session of the Central Council to ratify what has been agreed upon, and to elect a comprehensive executive committee that includes everyone, which constitutes the daily and responsible leadership ■
