What if someone experiencing a mental health crisis could walk into an emergency department designed specifically for their needs? 🏥

That’s what’s coming to Birchmount Hospital. Construction is underway on the Orlando Mental Health and Addictions Centre of Excellence, including Scarborough’s first 24/7 Mental Health ED - one of only three in Ontario.

Last year, SHN’s EDs saw more than 8,300 visits for mental health and substance use concerns. The new space will bring mental health nurses, social workers and psychiatrists together to provide specialized care designed around patients’ needs.

Made possible through transformational support from Orlando Corporation and other generous donors, this project builds on SHN’s commitment to mental health care, including our fully donor-funded Community Mental Health Centre, which saw more than 31,000 outpatient visits last year.

Love, Scarborough is back. ❤️

Today, a new chapter begins with six new faces and six powerful stories of the people who keep Scarborough climbing.

Meet Dr. Janice Nazareno, a Radiologist at SHN. Over 17 years caring for patients in Scarborough, she has seen breast imaging and cancer care change dramatically, including more younger women coming through the doors.

And the demand keeps rising. Cancer care at SHN has grown 22% in just three years, reaching 68,000 visits last year. That’s why transforming cancer care, including plans for a new cancer care centre, is one of our biggest. Through it all, our teams continue to deliver exceptional care for patients and families across Scarborough.

The climb continues.

Scarborough will always be part of Fefe Dobson’s story. ❤️

Growing up in Scarborough shaped Fefe into who she is today. Now, as a Love, Scarborough ambassador, she’s using her voice to advocate for the community that raised her and the hospitals that have cared for people close to her.

For Fefe, better healthcare funding isn’t only about what Scarborough needs today. It’s about creating a future where the next generation can walk into their local hospital feeling confident in the care waiting for them, instead of nervous about what they might find.

As we get ready to step into the next chapter of Love, Scarborough, Fefe reminds us why she’s proud to stand behind Scarborough and help our hospitals keep climbing. ❤️

Our story is far from finished.

Nearly 100,000 Scarborough residents don’t have a family doctor. It’s one of the healthcare challenges our community continues to face, and through our Love, Scarborough campaign, we’re working to change that.

Stay tuned to our channels on October 5, where we’ll be continuing our climb with new faces, new stories and a renewed push for the healthcare investment Scarborough deserves. 👀

❤️ When every second counts, SHN’s cardiac teams are ready.

This World Heart Day, we’re celebrating the teams delivering lifesaving cardiac care. As the regional cardiac centre for Scarborough-Durham, SHN cares for more than 3,500 cardiac inpatients and performs over 5,500 lab procedures each year, from opening blocked arteries to treating abnormal heart rhythms.

Our award-winning cardiac rehab team also helps patients recover and build strength through North America’s largest regional, community-based cardiac rehab service.

Demand for care is growing. With donor support, we can renew our cardiac labs, expand access to treatment and help more patients receive care sooner.
