Every day, SHN physicians go beyond the bedside to advocate for their patients. Today, they're also helping shape the future of healthcare in Scarborough.

We're proud to welcome Dr. Alexis Gordon Chief of Medicine and Dr. John You, Vascular Surgeon and SHN Foundation Board Member as the newest Co-Chairs of the Physicians' Campaign, joining Dr. Raymond Chan as they lead the next phase of physician giving in support of the Love, Scarborough campaign.

Since 2022, 177 SHN physicians have raised more than $2 million to help transform care across our hospitals. Now, they're setting their sights on the next $1 million to support bold investments in patient care, education, research and the future of SHN.

For Dr. Chan, continuing to support the campaign is deeply connected to what Scarborough means to him personally and professionally. "Scarborough is where I work, where many of my patients live, and where my own journey in Canada began as an immigrant. This community has played an important role in my life, and it is a privilege to give back and support it in any way I can."

"As high users of the hospital, we have a lot of skin in the game to make sure we're doing our best by our patients, and part of that is standing behind the hospital where we're doing the work," says Dr. Gordon.

Dr. You adds, "Part of the work we do in treating our patients is also advocating for them. We have to set the example by saying, 'I believe enough in my hospital that I'm going to put my money where my mouth is.'"

Thank you to every SHN physician who continues to lead by example and invest in the future of care for our community. ❤️

Congratulations to SHN Foundation Board member Ray Gupta on receiving an honorary Doctor of Laws from York University! 🎓👏

A respected business leader, philanthropist and dedicated champion of Scarborough, Ray’s story is one of perseverance and giving back. From humble beginnings as an immigrant, he built Sunray Group into one of Canada’s fastest-growing hospitality and development enterprises while remaining deeply committed to strengthening the communities around him.

At SHN, Ray’s generosity has helped make compassionate, accessible mental health care possible through the Ray Gupta and Family Mood & Anxiety Clinic at the SHN Community Mental Health Centre. The clinic provides specialized care for patients experiencing depression, panic disorders, stress-related symptoms and other mood and anxiety concerns.

We’re incredibly proud to have Ray as a member of our Board and grateful for his continued commitment to helping Scarborough thrive. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition, Dr. Gupta! 💙

The plans we make today can help shape a healthier Scarborough for generations to come. ❤️

On August 11, more than 120 community members joined us for our Chinese Estate Planning Seminar, coming together to learn, ask questions and plan for the future.

We were pleased to welcome guest speakers K. B. Ng and Vivian Lau, who shared their expertise on important estate planning topics, including wills, powers of attorney and estate administration. Attendees also learned how thoughtful legacy planning can help ensure the next generation of Scarborough residents continues to have access to exceptional healthcare, close to home.

Thank you to our guest speakers and everyone who joined us for making the seminar such a meaningful success!

Congratulations to SHN Foundation Board Member Roy Ratnavel on being named one of Canadian Immigrant’s Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Award recipients for 2026!

Roy’s remarkable journey has taken him from political prisoner in Sri Lanka to a distinguished career in Canada’s financial sector, and today, a national bestselling author, mentor and philanthropist. Throughout his journey, Roy has remained committed to opening doors for others and giving back to the country and community he calls home.

Here in Scarborough, that commitment includes helping advance culturally sensitive mental health care. In 2025, Roy and his wife made a transformational $1 million gift to SHN Foundation to support mental health services at Birchmount Hospital.

“Canada gave me a second chance at life, and opening doors for others is my way of giving back,” Roy shared with Canadian Immigrant.

What if AI could make your hospital discharge instructions easier to understand? 👀 That was just one of the real healthcare challenges students tackled this summer through Summer of Vibes at Scarborough Health Network.

At Grand Demo Day on August 7, students showcased projects like ContextCare, an AI tool being piloted at SHN that turns complex discharge summaries into clearer, patient-friendly language.

And that was just one idea. Students also explored AI-powered virtual patients for clinical training, personalized learning for future healthcare professionals, new ways to assess clinical skills, and research into burnout and resilience among future doctors.

The goal wasn’t technology for technology’s sake. It was exploring how AI can work alongside human skills like empathy, communication and compassion to improve how we learn and deliver care.

We’re grateful to donors like Tony Pialis, whose support for research and education leadership is helping SHN build the expertise to train and inspire the next generation.

The next generation of innovators isn’t just learning about the future of healthcare. They’re helping build it. 💡
