SOW GROW FEED Project Celebrates Filipino Heritage Month
By: Judith Gonzales
Today marks the official opening of the Seeds of Hope Pinakbet International Garden, a meaningful collaboration between Seeds of Hope Pinakbet International and the Toronto Kapuso Lions Club in support of service projects focused on environmental sustainability, hunger relief, diabetes awareness, and humanitarian outreach.
The SOW • GROW • FEED Project, which runs from spring through fall, is more than just a gardening initiative—it is a movement that transforms seeds into hope and harvests into acts of compassion. By sowing and nurturing vegetables throughout the growing season, volunteers not only care for the land but also contribute to the well-being of the community. The fresh produce harvested from the garden will be donated to nearby food banks, helping provide nutritious meals for individuals and families experiencing food insecurity, including those who are homeless in the area.
This project also promotes healthier living. The vegetables traditionally used in Pinakbet, a beloved Filipino dish, are naturally rich in nutrients and can be beneficial for people managing diabetes as part of a balanced diet. By encouraging the consumption of fresh, homegrown produce, the initiative supports healthier food choices while raising awareness about preventive health and wellness.
Beyond addressing hunger and health, the project is an environmental commitment. Every seed planted contributes to greener spaces, encourages sustainable gardening practices, and reminds us that caring for the earth is an investment in future generations. Through backyard and community gardening, participants learn that even small plots of land can create a lasting impact.
Volunteers are at the heart of this initiative. Community members are invited to help tend the garden on a daily basis, fostering teamwork, responsibility, and a shared sense of purpose. Working side by side, people from diverse backgrounds can cultivate not only vegetables but also friendships, understanding, and a stronger spirit of volunteerism.
The garden also serves as a bridge between generations and cultures. Founded by Maria Sherry Tan Lacson, Seeds of Hope Pinakbet International promotes backyard gardening using the seeds of traditional Filipino vegetables commonly found in Pinakbet. Through this initiative, Filipino Canadian children born in Canada have the opportunity to connect with their cultural roots, learn about traditional Filipino agriculture and cuisine, and appreciate the values of hard work, sustainability, and generosity that are deeply woven into their heritage.
Holding this official opening during Philippine Heritage Month makes the celebration even more significant. It honors the rich traditions of the Filipino community while demonstrating how cultural heritage can inspire practical solutions to modern challenges. The project beautifully weaves together culture, health, environmental stewardship, volunteerism, and humanitarian service into one shared mission.
The Seeds of Hope Pinakbet International Garden stands as a living testament that when communities come together with a common purpose, a single seed can grow into nourishment for the hungry, healing for the body, care for the environment, and hope for generations to come. Through collaboration, compassion, and service, this initiative truly embodies the spirit of “Sow with purpose, grow with love, and feed with hope.”
