For children and youth affected by trauma, non-contact boxing helps restore a baseline of safety and relaxation.

MJKO Mission 2021

MJKO is a South-Parkdale based charity, that uses leadership training to promote positive, healthy lifestyle choices for children and youth. With certified coaches, MJKO builds Community Champions by focusing on the needs of the whole person through non-contact boxing, which includes physical training (skipping, shadow boxing, defense moves) and mental skills training (visualiz

ation and meditation). Our programs allow students to develop an appreciation for physical fitness, inclusive communities, mindfulness, healthy eating and volunteerism. MJKO Hierarchy of Needs

(Following a bottom-up pyramid with self-actualization at the top)

Physiological
MJKO provides fresh, healthy food, and a safe space six days a week, within our Champion Centre located in South Parkdale, at no cost to the participant. Through daily training, the repetition of defensive moves, mental health exercises, fear is transformed into positive energy, confidence and empowerment. Our founder and Head Coach, Miranda Kamal knows firsthand, through lived experience that healing through boxing is possible. Kamal, a survivor of sexual assault at 16,spent years of her life in “flight” mode due to the trauma. It was only after taking up the sport of boxing as an adult, that she regained her sense of safety. Many of the youth who are attracted to the sport of boxing have been affected by some type of trauma either directly or indirectly. Love & Belonging
Participants feel they belong to an extended family. The MJKO team creates an environment of trust, belonging and community. Our MJKO family embraces lived experiences, differences, and creates a healthy culture of inclusion, love, health, and success for all. Esteem & Confidence
We build our participants self-esteem. The process is highly contextual and unique to each person. MJKO nurtures relationships, mentors, and provides paid employment opportunities for our participants. Self-actualization
We strive to help young people pursue their dreams and become positive members of society as Community Champions.

🥊 June Update

It’s hard to believe we’re already in June.

While I continue to focus on my recovery, Saturday boxing has been going strong thanks to our incredible coaches, volunteers, and staff. I can’t thank them enough for continuing to show up for our young people each week.

To all of our students: I miss you, and I am so proud of you.

Not just for the boxing skills you’re developing, but for the young people you’re becoming. Every week you show resilience, respect, leadership, and kindness—qualities that will take you much further than any punch ever will.

Keep working hard. Keep supporting each other. Keep believing in yourselves.

We’re cheering you on every step of the way. ❤️🥊

Congratulations to MJKO Board member and Coach .j.zhang on participating in the annual fundraiser — an incredible event where police officers, firefighters, and emergency service members step into the ring to raise funds for and the important work they do supporting members of the emergency services community and their families across Ontario. 🥊

Congratulations as well on your victory! You had a very solid training camp, and it was great to see all the hard work pay off in the ring.

A big thank you to coaches , , and for all of the support, preparation, and guidance throughout camp.

We’re so happy to see you back in the ring fighting for a great cause. Congratulations again on the win, Coach Jimmy! 👏🔥

Grateful. Truly grateful.

A huge thank you to the incredible team at for their generous donation of gently used athletic shoes to our MJKO athletes.

For many of our youth, something as simple as a proper pair of training shoes can make a world of difference — in confidence, in comfort, and in how they show up for themselves in the gym and in life.

This donation is more than just shoes.
It’s support. It’s belief. It’s community showing up.

Shout out to Alejandro for making this happen — we see you, and we appreciate you.

At MJKO, we remove barriers so young people can access sport, mentorship, and leadership opportunities — and moments like this remind us we’re not doing it alone.

To everyone at F45 Parkdale: thank you for stepping up (literally and figuratively) and helping our athletes keep moving forward.

This is what community looks like.
This is what it means to fight your way back — together.

This is a real invoice.

$9,040.

Not for programs.
Not for gloves.
Not for coaching.

This is the cost of:
✔️ audits
✔️ tax filings
✔️ financial reporting

Everything required to be a registered charity in Canada. 🇨🇦

Here’s what most people don’t see:

These documents are required by government and funders.

But they’re often not funded.

And most donations are directed to things people can see—a meal, a program, a kid in the ring.

So the question is:

Where does this money come from?

After 17 years, I can tell you—this is one of the hardest parts.

We’re lucky to have an accounting partner who helps raise funds for this each year.

And no—they can’t just do it for free.
That would be a conflict of interest.

So funds are raised, and an independent firm completes the audit.

This isn’t a complaint.

It’s just the reality behind the work. It is a challenge for us to think differently when making donations until policies change at the government level to support some of these costs.
