Should the church uphold inherited rules that exclude people from full participation? Acts 8 suggests that welcoming those once considered unworthy is not new for Christians.

Our exploration of Acts continues with the story of a wealthy African eu**ch who had been excluded from full participation in the faith. Join us as we reflect on how we should ideally be living out the new covenant in the 21st century.

This will be a hybrid service. Join us via live video as usual or in person at: 320 Richmond Street East, Suite 101, Toronto, ON M5A 1P9.

We will share communion 🍞🍇 with all those participating live from around the world 🌏

Was Moses historical? Did the Exodus really happen? As Bible literalists attempt to rescue Moses as a historical figure, and as atheist advocates debunk and dismiss what they perceive as antiquated views of the world, both miss the nuance and real meaning that the story has to offer readers, both in antiquity and today. In this live lecture, John Hamer of Toronto Centre Place invites you to look at Moses as myth to reveal a world of meaning often concealed behind modern cognitive categories, defying our tendency to intuitively classify knowledge as either fact or fiction.

Join the livestream to participate in the discussion and to ask questions of our lecturer during the Q&A.

How can the vision of radical generosity in Acts guide us in the modern world?

05/29/2026

How did Christianity move from charismatic apostles and practices like speaking in tongues to bishops shaping the texts Christians should read — the writings that later became the New Testament?
This clip is from our lecture “Speaking in Tongues: Sacred Symbol or Holy Babble?” with John Hamer.

Acts presents an idealized picture of the early church: one heart and mind, rapid growth, all possessions held in common, and everyone’s needs satisfied. How can this vision of radical generosity guide us in the modern world? And how can a diverse community be “of one heart and mind” without imposing conformity?

This Sunday, we will consider how we are being called to embody radical generosity, abolish poverty and end needless suffering, and seek unity without conformity in our own time and place. Our speaker will be retired Community of Christ apostle Andrew Bolton, joining us from his home in the United Kingdom.

What happened between the Old and New Testaments? The Books of the Maccabees—excluded from the Hebrew Bible and treated by Protestants as Apocrypha—tell the story of the Maccabean Revolt, the rise of the Hasmonean kingdom, the origins of Hanukkah, and the changing hopes for a Messiah within the political and religious landscape that shaped the time of Jesus.

In this live lecture, John Hamer of Toronto Centre Place will lead a deep dive into the many texts that attempt to tell the story of the Maccabean revolt and consider how each compares with the rest of the historical record.

Join us live to explore this topic with other participants in the chat and the Q&A. What do the Books of the Maccabees reveal about empire, resistance, and religious identity? Why were they accepted in Catholic and Orthodox Bibles but excluded from the Protestant canon? What insights do these texts offer for our historical and theological understanding of the New Testament?
