CHC seeks papers both personal and scholarly for inclusion in the sixth annual issue of Culinary Chronicles: Occasional Papers of the Culinary Historians of Canada. The theme is “Ingredients – Indigenous, Imported, Imagined.” Your subject can be familial, local, regional or national; your tone can be nostalgic, critical or investigative; your era can be contemporary, recent or historic – provided you see through Canadian eyes.

We're curious...what are your questions, answers, investigations and discoveries about the indigenous, imported or imaginary culinary ingredients, however you understand them, in Canada’s history and fiction? Share them with a contribution to Culinary Chronicles 2026!

To get the full description regarding CHC's call for proposals for the sixth edition of Culinary Chronicles, please email either [email protected] or [email protected].

Many cookbook prizes were given out to deserving authors at the Taste Canada Awards ceremony, which occurred last week on November 10th.

The CHC would like to congratulate Jan Feduck for winning the Silver award in the "Culinary Narratives" category, for her book "Dining Out with History at Atlantic Canada's Historic Sites." She spoke to some of our membership at a virtual Zoom event in January of this year about her book, sharing a virtual tour of a selection of historic sites, including Fortress of Louisbourg, L’Anse aux Meadows, and so many more fascinating places.

Great work, Jan!

We are pleased to announce that the honorary member for 2025 is one of our longest serving members, Sherry Murphy! Pictured below is Sherry recieving the award from our Past President, Sarah Hood.

For the past two decades, Sherry Murphy has been one of the most dedicated and generous volunteers for the Culinary Historians of Canada, and other organizations as well. She has extensive knowledge of open-hearth and wood-oven cooking techniques, and her cakes and cookies, baked from historic recipes, have enriched numerous events, especially our annual Baking for the Victorian Christmas Table, which she leads.

She has served for many years as a volunteer historic cook at Montgomery’s Inn and Fort York National Historic Site. She contributes a column on historic cooking to the Bluffs Monitor newspaper in Scarborough, Ontario. In particular, she has become an expert in WWI-era cooking, and has made many presentations on the topic, including a notable presentation to thousands of students visiting France for the centenary of Vimy Ridge.

Congratulations, Sherry!

We still are thinking about the delicious treats that were made for us on Sunday at our Annual General Meeting! We would like to send a heartfelt thank you to Jan Main, who made every single one of the baked goods that were served at our event.

All of them came from "Aunt Maud’s Recipe Book: From the Kitchen of L.M. Montgomery", by Elaine and Kelly Crawford (Norval, ON: Moulin Publishing, 1996). They include the following dishes: Butterscotch Squares, Boston Cookies, Layer Cookies, Mrs. MacPherson’s Gingersnaps, Park Corner Ribbon Cake with Orange Icing, and Apple Sauce Cake with Lemon Glaze.

Thank you for your hard work and diligence in baking them for CHC!

At Lambton House in Toronto, many in-person and online attendees learned about our activities over the past year, bid on books at our silent auction, and listened with rapt attention to Dr. Andrea McKenzie during her talk on "The Delights of Cake", discussing how cake was an integral part of author L.M. Montgomery's life, as well as for the heroines in her many novels. We also ate delicious treats inspired by Anne of Green Gables!

Many thanks are in order: to Lambton House for lending us their space; to Mya Sangster and Sherry Murphy for making such lovely refreshments, and to Dr. McKenzie for giving such a fascinating talk!
