Thank you, Christie community.

You showed up when we asked for help giving Christie kids and youth a great Canadian summer!

And it made a real difference.

This summer, Christie welcomed more children arriving with special needs than ever before. Because of your generosity, an extra staff person worked alongside our camp counsellors every day, giving children who needed one-on-one support the chance to fully join in.

“That extra staff support, so a special needs child can safely feel free to be up and out of their seat and exploring their environment, has been important,” says Antonica, one of Christie’s Children’s Program Workers.

Your support also helped older youth at Anchor House enjoy a summer filled with structure, connection and community, many during their first summer in Canada.

THANK YOU for helping every Christie child and youth feel welcome, included and cared for this summer.

✨Golden summer camp moments... don’t just happen on their own.

They happen because caring staff are there to plan activities, supervise, build trust and help children feel included.

Emmalyn, a past Christie camp counsellor, described her summer at Christie as “more than just a job.” She remembered field trips, shared activities, conversations with families and a cultural celebration where children shared their cultures through dance and traditional meals.

Help us hire a star camp counsellor like Emmalyn to support children and youth summer programming. Every $100 provides 5 hours of summer programming!

Summer matters for our youth, too.

Christie supports unaccompanied and separated refugee youth, many of whom are spending their first summer in Canada having arrived without a trusted adult.

A youth recreational and leisure activities program coordinator will help provide safe, structured summer activities, outings and connection to community opportunities for approximately 12 youth, ages 16-18.

Please give today. Help Christie youth stay active, connected and supported this summer!

For a child new to Canada, a summer field trip can mean SO much.

Mio, Maisha’s young son, took part in Christie’s Summer Camp last year, including a field trip to Ripley’s Aquarium.

For a child new to Canada, experiences like that can be unforgettable: they are chances to explore, play, build friendships and feel a sense of belonging in a new city.

Please help us raise $10,000 to support summer staffing for Christie children and youth: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/crwcTO/campaign/keep-summer-camp-open-for-christie-kids

This World Refugee Day, I joined the Christie Refugee Welcome Centre for a celebration of the refugees who call University—Rosedale home, and the contributions they bring to our community.

Christie’s Centre for Refugee Children received a generous capital grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to create an indoor gym for unaccompanied refugee youth residing at the Centre for Refugee Children’s emergency youth shelter, Anchor House.

The gym opened this month and has become a beloved hang-out spot for the youth living at Anchor House; a small, tucked away spot at the Centre for young people to stay physically active amidst a particularly heavy winter. The gym is equipped with weights, stationary bikes, lifting benches, and rowing machines.

We’re so thankful to for this investment in creating vital spaces for socialization and physical activity onsite at Anchor House where refugee youth can come together in belonging and community and good health.

In addition to the gym, the capital grant from also allowed the Centre for Refugee Children’s Anchor House to purchase a dining room table, study room table, chairs, outdoor BBQ and dining set in an effort to foster even more places and spaces of togetherness and good health.

✨CHRISTMAS AT CHRISTIE✨✨✨

Ever wondered what a room at Christie for a family of three or a family of four (with newborn) looks like?

For the first time in a long time, we have empty rooms at Christie. This is a trend almost every holiday season as families rise to the pressure of securing housing in order to spend their first Christmas in Canada in their own space.

In total, six families have or will have moved out of Christie this month.
