Last weekend, Wellspring attended Oncology Caregiver Day, hosted by The Hospital for Sick Children, connecting with parents and caregivers of children and youth affected by cancer.

Throughout the day, families had the opportunity to connect with one another, learn about caregiver wellness, share experiences, and discover resources available to support them. Wellspring was honoured to be invited as a community resource partner, helping caregivers learn more about programs and services that can provide support, connection, and hope when it is needed most.

On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we reflect on the importance of listening, learning, and working together.

Last week, participants, Elders, and partners gathered for Piliriqatigiiniq Reflection Day as part of Nourish for the Inuit Community, a partnership between Wellspring, Tungasuvvingat Inuit and The Ottawa Cancer Foundation.

Thirteen community members attended the session, including three Inuit Elders. In keeping with tradition, the gathering opened with the lighting of the Qulliq and a prayer led by an Elder and concluded with the extinguishing of the flame and a final prayer of thanks. Participants shared their experiences through facilitated discussions, individual interviews, and an arts-based activity, while an Inuk graphic recorder visually captured the program's impact.

Over the past year, the program has brought Inuit community members together to explore nutrition, culture, healing, and cancer support. During the Reflection Day, participants shared how much they valued the opportunity to connect as Inuit, share personal experiences, and discuss the impact cancer has had on their lives and communities.

Piliriqatigiiniq is an Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit principle meaning "working together for a common cause" and it continues to guide this work.

As comes to a close, Wellspring spoke with Tammie Sutherland on Television about addressing the gap in cancer support for children, teens and young adults affected by cancer💚

Wellspring Associate Program Director, Lauren McLeod, and Sam Taylor, a member who participated in our parent support programs when her daughter had cancer, talked about the current supports available, expanding cancer support programs for youth and the hidden impacts cancer has on young people.
