BANA Publishes Guidance on Transcribing Mathematics and Science in UEB - At its face-to-face meeting in May, the Braille Authority of North America (BANA) approved Guidance on Transcribing Mathematics and Science in UEB. This publication replaces Provisional Guidance on Transcribing Mathematics in UEB and is now available in PDF and BRF versions on the BANA website. The newly adopted guidance document incorporates recent revisions to the international publication Guidelines for Technical Material, section 1.7 Choice and Placement of Grade 1 Indicators, by the International Council on English Braille (ICEB). The guidance document also includes an expanded selection of examples to illustrate transcription of math and science expressions in UEB. the document can be found at the follosing link: https://www.brailleauthority.org/unified-english-braille-codebooks

The mission of the Braille Authority of North America is to assure literacy for tactile readers through the standardization of braille and/or tactile graphics.

Braille Literacy Canada | Braille Literacy Canada and CAER celebrate the release of the National Guidelines for the Production of e-Text:: Toronto, Ontario — June 29, 2026 — The Canadian Association of Educational Resource Centres for Alternate Format Materials (CAER) and Braille Literacy Canada (BLC) today acknowledge the official release of the National Guidelines for the Production of e-Text. These guidelines, developed collaboratively by CAER member centres and hosted by Braille Literacy Canada (BLC) on its website, represent the foundational standard for all e-Text produced for Canadian students with print disabilities. CAER member centres produce or procure accessible alternate format educational materials for students with print disabilities — students who may not be able to perceive visual content, manipulate a physical book, or who face barriers to comprehension when using print materials.

Braille is literacy: Rice researchers are reshaping the science of reading - For many people, braille is something they encounter only on elevator buttons or public signs. Others assume advances in audiobooks and screen readers have largely replaced the need for braille. Rice University researchers Simon Fischer-Baum and Robert Englebretson say those assumptions miss a fundamental truth. Braille is literacy.

As schools across the country increasingly embrace evidence-based approaches to reading instruction through the science of reading, two Rice researchers are leading an effort to ensure students who learn through braille are not left out of the research shaping literacy education.

Once enrolled, students are assigned a Certified Instructor. This course leads to the Letter of Proficiency in Unified English Braille Proofreading. Upon successful completion, graduates are qualified to proofread transcriptions of English print materials in contracted Unified English Braille.
