Thank you to 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐡 and the 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 for a fantastic evening at 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐔𝐂 on Sept 26. And heartfelt thanks to 𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐠𝐚 𝐌𝐜𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐞 for her lovely comments in the Barrie News (see below) — we appreciate every word and the way they shine a light on our choir in the Barrie community.

On Saturday night, the Toronto Welsh Male Voice Choir opened a new concert season for the Barrie Concert Association at Collier Street United Church.

Under the expert direction of William Woloschuk and skilful piano accompaniment of Matthew C***s, the choir delighted a full house with beautiful melodies, rich harmonies and so much heart.

Since 1995, the choir has serenaded audiences with the "achingly beautiful songs of the mountains and valleys of Wales." But to my surprise, their repertoire also straddled other traditions including Canadian folk, spirituals, operatic arias, show tunes and pop.

The choir softened hearts with their clear Welsh diction, gentle harmonies and sensitive renditions of traditional Welsh tunes, but also of classics such as Rutter’s 𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘦𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘩, Lauridsen’s 𝘚𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘯 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘚𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘕𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 and folksy modern favourites such as 𝘞𝘦 𝘙𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘈𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯 and Lightfoot’s 𝘚𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘢 𝘞𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳’𝘴 𝘕𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵.

They thrilled the audience in rousing "anthems" such as 𝘐 𝘋𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘥 𝘢 𝘋𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮 and 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘙𝘢𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘔𝘦 𝘜𝘱.

And to our complete surprise, this Welsh male voice choir entertained us with humour and a flair for the dramatic as the audience eagerly joined in the "baseball version" of 𝘚𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘵 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦.

"So good … so good," a definite crowd pleaser.

Throughout the concert, I was struck by the choir’s bond, so evident in the joy on their faces and delight in each other’s talents. They even made the invitation for others to audition and join them. 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘞𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘐 𝘋𝘰 𝘞𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘔𝘺 𝘔𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘤 was a lovely tune sung so confidently and almost as a personal anthem for the choir … "to give me hope so I can carry on."

The choir’s finale, 𝘓𝘦𝘢𝘯 𝘰𝘯 𝘔𝘦/𝘞𝘦 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘖𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦, began in unison, then grew in its soulful gospel sound as the audience clapped to its catchy rhythms and embraced its powerful message of community and mutual support.

Their message is simple: "the things we all share far outweigh our differences."

What a wonderful Saturday evening we had sharing our music with such an enthusiastic and appreciative audience at Collier Street UC in Barrie on Saturday! The Toronto Welsh Male Voice Choir was honoured to be invited by the 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.

A special thank‑you to 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐡 for his kind invitation and for hosting us so graciously. The energy and warmth in the room made every note a joy to sing.

Anyone who has ever attended a TWMVC concert has witnessed William’s extraordinary gift — the dynamic energy on the podium, the precision of his direction, and his unmatched ability to draw every ounce of emotion, harmony, and musical colour from our voices. His conducting is not just skilled… it’s masterful. It’s art in motion.

Under William’s guidance, the choir has reached levels of performance we once thought impossible. Standing ovations, heartfelt audience accolades, and unforgettable concert moments are all part of the legacy he has shaped. From hundreds of performances across the GTA, to national tours throughout Canada, to international stages including Carnegie Hall, and deeply meaningful concerts in Wales — William has led us with vision, passion, and unwavering excellence.

Although we will miss him dearly when he retires, we are profoundly grateful that we will continue to benefit from his musical and artistic leadership throughout our weekly rehearsals and upcoming concerts until 2027. Replacing his talent, experience, and artistry will be a tremendous challenge for the choir, but his influence will remain in every chord we sing.

The Toronto Welsh Male Voice Choir extends its warmest wishes to William for a well deserved retirement when the time comes, and every success in whatever new ventures he chooses to explore. His legacy will forever be part of who we are.

𝗪𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 — 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝘀𝗼 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱.
After a hugely successful July tour of the Maritimes and a well‑earned August break, the Toronto Welsh Male Voice Choir is together again, filling the room with familiar faces, shared laughter, and that unmistakable four‑part harmony we’ve all missed.

Tonight we’re rehearsing “𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗪𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗜 𝗗𝗼 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗠𝘆 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰” a song that speaks directly to what every chorister knows in their bones — that no matter what life throws at you, music has a way of lifting your spirit, steadying your breath, and reminding you that you’re not alone.

𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐥𝐲:

As we enjoy this final long weekend of summer, we want to wish all our followers, supporters, and choir families a very 𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐲 𝐋𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐃𝐚𝐲.

Labour Day in Canada has deep roots in the 19th‑century movement for fair hours, safer workplaces, and the right for workers to stand together. The first Canadian Labour Day parade in 1872 marked a turning point — a celebration of unity, dignity, and the belief that communities thrive when workers are respected.

For us in the TWMVC, this day carries an added layer of meaning. In Wales, the labour movement is woven into the nation’s identity, shaped by the courage and hardship of generations of miners and slate quarrymen. Their fight for safety, fair pay, and basic human rights came at great personal cost. From the coalfields of South Wales, to the slate quarries of North Wales — places some of our members and their families once called home — were built on resilience, solidarity, and the unbreakable spirit of working people.

Today, we honour the workers of both countries who stood up, spoke out, and paved the way for the rights we often take for granted. We owe so much to those who fought for fairness, dignity, and the belief that every person’s labour has value.

From all of us at the TWMVC, we hope your day is filled with rest, family, and the joy of music.
