The process to make a new innovative ovarian cancer treatment accessible in Canada has stalled.

We are demanding provincial and territorial decision-makers to restart critical negotiations for ELAHERE (mirvetuximab soravtansine) so that eligible Canadians can access the first meaningful new treatment for ovarian cancer in a decade.

This therapy represents a crucial advancement for women with FRα-positive, platinum-resistant ovarian cancer, offering a new personalized treatment option where very few exist. For women with this type of cancer, standard chemotherapy is no longer effective, and ELAHERE can give them hope.

Breakthroughs don’t happen when a treatment is discovered; they happen when patients can access it.

Part III of III: Kristine’s story

We've covered what biomarkers are and why they're important. Now hear from someone who experienced biomarker testing firsthand.

By the time someone is offered biomarker testing, they're often already navigating an overwhelming amount of information. For Kristine, that was certainly true.

When Kristine was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2024, her focus was simple: to get through surgery and get through chemotherapy.

"I felt like I was suddenly expected to understand this whole new world of information... everything all at once."

As part of her care, Kristine was offered biomarker testing. She met with a genetic counsellor who explained the testing process, what the results could mean, and answered her questions. After her initial testing, her oncologist also recommended HRD testing to provide additional information that could help guide her treatment plan.

In Kristine's case, the test results did not change her treatment. But having that information gave both her and her healthcare team greater confidence in the decisions they were making.

"I've come to appreciate that knowledge doesn't change the diagnosis – it can, however, change how you experience the journey."

Every person's experience is different, and biomarker testing won't affect everyone's treatment. But for many people, it can provide valuable information that helps inform care and supports informed decision-making.
