When launched their National Mini Forest Pilot program in 2022, these types of projects were still relatively new in Canada.

Now the phenomenon has branched out across the country.

In our latest blog, we spoke to Jenn McCallum, Green Infrastructure Manager at Green Communities Canada about the impact of these projects and leading a mini forest activity at the recent Evergreen Conference. We also share a peek at our own school ground greening project inspired by the Miyawaki method.

Schoolgrounds are a major component of public spaces in Canadian cities.

How school grounds are designed plays a major role in how a community or city will, or will not, adapt to climate change.

Evergreen’s Climate Ready Schools builds on our 30-year legacy of transforming school grounds across Canada into nature-rich play and learning environments for both children and their communities.

Help us green Canadian schoolgrounds by donating to Evergreen today: https://www.evergreen.ca/?form=FUNZSMDEJLD

Schools are hubs of learning and play, where children can develop and build relationships with each other and the natural world.

So why are most schoolgrounds covered in pavement?

In Canadian cities, schools are among the top three landowners, with over 4,000 acres owned by school boards in Toronto alone.

With so much space for children to enjoy, now is the time to transform schoolgrounds into places where children can play and explore together and connect with nature in their everyday environment.

For 30 years, Evergreen has transformed school grounds into green, climate-ready spaces.

We're excited to be featured in the latest edition of Novae Res Urbis!

We've launched a nearly $16-million revitalization project across Evergreen Brick Works— renewing five key areas while staying deeply rooted in our mission to build healthier and more inclusive cities through better public spaces.

Swipe to learn more about the next chapter of one of Toronto's most prominent adaptive reuse sites.

Thank you to our project partners, LGA architectural partners and DTAH.

Last month, Grade 3 & 5 students from Morse Street Junior Public School’s Eco-Club joined us Evergreen Brick Works as part of our School Visits program for a special Earth Month visit 🌱

After a morning hike, students rolled up their sleeves in the Food Forest with our gardening team to learn the full process of making compost—when they dug in, they found plenty of worms (which were, safe to say, a big hit).

Check out the photos to see it all in action.

A huge thank you to our partners who made this possible: for donating soil and mulch to help feed our Food Forest and gardens, and for their team’s hands-on support in building the Food Forest and a healthier future for people and our planet.

What if our cities started saying 'Yes' instead of 'No'?

Yes to kids playing. Yes to skateboarding. Yes to cycling. Yes to pedestrian-first streets. Yes to more parks, trails and trees.

Our cities can start to say 'Yes' if we build the right public places, like Evergreen Brick Works.

This is your last chance to join us at the Evergreen Conference this May 6-7!

Ticket sales close Friday, May 1 at 11:59pm ET. 🎟️

This year’s theme, ‘Cities bursting with life,’ is a deliberately optimistic take at a time when conversations about cities can feel stuck on what’s not working. 🌱

The conference is about shifting that energy, creating space for the kinds of connections that don’t usually happen: the kind where you find yourself in conversation with someone from a completely different sector, and leave with a new idea, perspective or possibility.

Better, greener cities are possible. Let’s roll up our sleeves together.

Get your ticket before Friday at 11:59pm ET: www.evergreen.ca/conference (link in bio)
