Evergreen Brick Works

Evergreen Brick Works A reimagined historic brick factory in Toronto’s Don Valley. Here we test ideas that will help shape cities across Canada
for the better.
(794)

Run by Evergreen, a national non-profit transforming public spaces in our cities to build a healthier future for people and our planet. Whether you visit our public markets, attend conferences or
events in our redeveloped kiln building, the TD Future Cities
Centre, enjoy outdoor learning and nature play, or explore
public art in Toronto’s ravine system, you are helping shape
how we build sustainab

le cities of the future. All funds generated on campus support Evergreen, a national
not-for-profit accelerating urban innovations that make
Canadian cities more livable, green and prosperous. Evergreen acknowledges that the Brick Works site is built on occupied
Indigenous territory – the traditional homelands of the Wendat (Wendat)
and Petun (Pah-toon) First Nations, the Haudenosaunee (Ho-den-
O-Show-nee), and the Mississaugas of the Credit River – today home to
many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island.

Schoolgrounds are a major component of public spaces in Canadian cities.

How school grounds are designed plays a major role in how a community or city will, or will not, adapt to climate change.

Evergreen’s Climate Ready Schools builds on our 30-year legacy of transforming school grounds across Canada into nature-rich play and learning environments for both children and their communities.

Help us green Canadian schoolgrounds by donating to Evergreen today: https://www.evergreen.ca/?form=FUNZSMDEJLD

Schools are hubs of learning and play, where children can develop and build relationships with each other and the natural world.

So why are most schoolgrounds covered in pavement?

In Canadian cities, schools are among the top three landowners, with over 4,000 acres owned by school boards in Toronto alone.

With so much space for children to enjoy, now is the time to transform schoolgrounds into places where children can play and explore together and connect with nature in their everyday environment.

For 30 years, Evergreen has transformed school grounds into green, climate-ready spaces.

A shady playground shouldn’t be a luxury. 🌳

Yet today, 68% of playgrounds have no shade in their main play areas—leaving kids and families exposed to unrelenting sun during increasingly hot summers.

We’re proud to see Evergreen featured in a recent article by Toronto Star, “Why finding a shady playground for your kids is getting harder and harder in Toronto.”

The article highlights a growing challenge: as cities heat up and tree canopy declines, many play spaces are left without the shade, natural materials, and thoughtful design needed to keep children safe and comfortable.

At Evergreen, we know it doesn’t have to be this way. Spaces like the Children’s Garden at Evergreen Brick Works show what’s possible: where trees, natural materials and creative design come together to create cooler, safer and more inspiring places to play.

Come experience the Children's Garden for yourself! It's open every day, all year round.
