Abiona Centre We are a Children's Mental Health Centre that serves the needs of adolescent parents and their babies

Our roots in the community date back to the beginning of the twentieth century, when the Fred Victor Mission opened its doors to a women in need and subsequently founded a mission dedicated to support for u***d, pregnant women, single mothers and their babies. This mission, was eventually incorporated as The Massey Centre for Women in 1989.

As part of our Umoja Project, Abiona Centre for Infant & Early Mental Health recently hosted a Resource Fair for residents in our Transitional Housing Program (THP).

The event created a welcoming space for families to connect directly with community partners, learn about available supports, and build meaningful relationships with organizations that can walk alongside them on their journey.

A heartfelt thank you to the incredible partner agencies who joined us and generously shared their time, knowledge, and services. Your collaboration helps strengthen the circle of support around the families we serve.

You are capable of more than you think.

During Black History Month, we had the privilege of welcoming Emily Mills to lead an inspiring workshop for young parents at the Abiona Centre.

Through powerful storytelling and interactive activities, Emily encouraged participants to reflect on their strengths, overcome self-doubt, and stay hopeful during difficult moments.

Thank you, Emily, for sharing your wisdom and creating such a meaningful and uplifting experience for our community.

Black Mental Health Week reminds us that healing has always lived within our communities.

The numbers are real:
📊 27.9% report fair or poor mental health
📈 32% experience moderate to severe anxiety

These are not just statistics — they are lived experiences.

At Abiona Centre, we believe healing grows through connection, culture, and community.

Speak. Listen. Heal. Together.

As Black History Month comes to a close, we reflect on the values that continue to guide our work at Abiona Centre — care, equity, and the strength of community.

This month, our CEO reminded us that honouring Black history also means showing up every day with compassion, cultural safety, and a commitment to dignity and choice for the families we serve.

Today and always, we honour the resilience, creativity, and leadership of Black communities.

👉 Save this post to reflect later, or share it to honour Black history and the future it continues to shape.

At Abiona Centre, our mission is to strengthen families and build healthy, connected communities.

We were proud to welcome students from Centennial College (Early Childhood Education program) for a field visit to learn about how community agencies support children and families and connect them to essential resources.

Together, we are helping shape the next generation of educators who will support families with care, compassion, and cultural understanding.

We believe real change begins by listening to the community 🖤

Black community members in Ontario are invited to take part in a research study focused on understanding primary care experiences and preferences. By sharing your voice, you can help shape more inclusive and culturally responsive healthcare services.

Please check the flyer for eligibility and participation details — and feel free to share this post with someone who may be interested.

We’re honoured to support this initiative alongside Wellesley Institute and Black Health Alliance.
