Creating Opportunities Through Sport for More Than 18 Years.

For more than 18 years, the TDSB Barrier-Free Games have brought students together to experience the joy of sport, recreation, and inclusion. This year, Variety Village was proud to welcome more than 1,600 students from TDSB, with approximately 400 students participating each day over the four-day event.

As one of Canada's leading accessible sport and recreation facilities, Variety Village provides the space, expertise, and environment where participants of all abilities can be active, build confidence, and celebrate their achievements. The Barrier-Free Games are a powerful example of what can be achieved when accessibility is built into every aspect of the experience.

Coinciding with National AccessAbility Week, this year's Games served as an important reminder of the importance of creating opportunities where everyone can participate, belong, and thrive.

Thank you to the students, educators, volunteers, and supporters who helped make this year's Barrier-Free Games a success. We are honoured to continue serving as a place where every body belongs.

Today we’re grateful to share a meaningful investment in accessibility in our community.

Through its Barrier Buster Program, the Rick Hansen Foundation, in partnership with RBC, has awarded Variety Village one of 40 grants across Canada—a $40,000 investment toward the installation of an automatic door to our outdoor courtyard—helping unlock year-round access to an important outdoor space for children, families, and the broader Southwest Scarborough community.

This investment is about more than infrastructure. It’s about removing barriers and creating the conditions for participation, inclusion, and connection.

And it’s a powerful reminder of what becomes possible when community steps forward.

Because while investments like this open doors—literally and figuratively—it is ongoing community support that ensures children and families can continue to walk through them every day.

This June, thanks to Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities and an anonymous donor, every gift of cash or securities to Variety Village is being tripled up to $150,000. That means more access to inclusive summer camps, recreation, and sport programs for children and youth who rely on them most.

We’re deeply grateful to the Rick Hansen Foundation and RBC for helping move this work forward.

And we’re inviting our broader community to join them in ensuring access doesn’t stop at infrastructure—but extends into the programs, opportunities, and experiences that make participation possible.
