An organization built to give back to ice hockey officials, on and off the ice

10/19/2026

What a weekend for Mike’s Crew NL!

We travelled across the island to distribute equipment kits to first-year officials, connect with local hockey communities, and spread awareness about our program and the opportunities available to those looking to get started in officiating. During our tour, we handed out over 80 kits across five communities.

One of the most rewarding parts of the tour was hearing the stories behind why these individuals wanted to become officials. Some are following in the footsteps of their parents or siblings. Others are stepping into their first employment opportunity, while many are excited to learn another side of the game they love.

Every story is different, but they all share one thing in common: a passion for hockey and a willingness to give officiating a chance.

That’s what Mike’s Crew NL is all about — removing barriers, supporting the next generation of officials, and helping grow the game across Newfoundland and Labrador.

A huge thank you to everyone who welcomed us into their communities and helped make this year’s equipment distribution tour a success. The future of officiating is bright, and we’re proud to be part of the journey!

Every year, Metro Referees Association awards an official with the Michael Dinn Memorial award for their contribution to the program, along with the time they give back to their minor association. This year’s recipient is Corey Drake ().

Last season, Mike’s Crew created a new award (Edna Louise Dinn - MVP Award) named after Michael’s mother. This award is presented to the official who presents leadership and dedication to their minor association. This year’s winner is Aaron O’Leary from Ceebees Minor Referee Association.

We also had Michael’s son Joel helping us out all weekend long. He was in attendance to present the awards. Thanks Joel!
