Hospice is a patient-centered form of palliative/end-of-life care which aims to make the last months of life as comfortable and peaceful as possible for patients and their caregivers. Hospice strives to improve quality of life at the end of life, not only for patients, but also for their family and friends. The patient, family and volunteer caregivers are considered an integral unit. Hospice is not a place – it’s a concept. The focus is on caring, not curing; on life, not death. Quality of life, family wellness, community involvement and personal dignity are all part of the compassionate and progressive vision of Hospice.

Finding the strength to move forward when your heart feels heavy isn't easy.

Grief, loss, and life's challenges can leave us feeling overwhelmed and uncertain of the path ahead. Remember, strength doesn't always look like taking big steps—it can be as simple as getting through today, asking for support, or allowing yourself the space to heal.

At Shuswap Hospice Society, we offer compassionate care, understanding, and a variety of support services to help you find strength, hope, and connection during difficult times.

You don't have to walk this journey alone. 💙

Gratitude and grief can exist side by side.

Being grateful for what you have doesn't mean you don't miss what you've lost.

Sometimes it's hard to hold both feelings at the same time—to appreciate the blessings in your life while grieving the people, experiences, or dreams that are no longer there.

What's important is recognizing those feelings and giving yourself permission to experience them. There is no right or wrong way to navigate grief.

Be gentle with yourself. Make space for gratitude. Make space for grief. Both are part of your journey.

Being Fine...

"How are you?"

I'm fine.

Sometimes "fine" means:
✔️ I'm getting by.
✔️ I'm managing.
✔️ I'm not sick.
✔️ I have what I need.

But sometimes "fine" is just the easiest answer to give.

Talking about how you're really feeling can help lighten the load and remind you that you don't have to carry everything on your own.

At Shuswap Hospice Society, we offer compassionate one-on-one support and monthly drop-in support for anyone who needs a safe space to talk, listen, and connect.

📅 June Drop-In Support
🕓 Wednesday June 17th from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM

You don't have to be in crisis to reach out. Sometimes moving from "fine" to "good" starts with a conversation.

Listening is one of the purest expressions of empathy.

It says:
I am here with you.
You deserve my full attention.
Your story matters.
I may not have all the answers, but I am willing to listen.

Sometimes the most meaningful support isn't found in the perfect words—it's found in being present, holding space, and truly hearing someone.

At the Shuswap Hospice Society, our staff and volunteers are here to listen, support, and walk alongside you on your journey. You don't have to face life's challenges alone.

💜 Caregivers Need Care Too 💜

Loving someone enough to care for them when they need you is often the easy part of being a caregiver.

Remembering to show that same love, compassion, and kindness to yourself can be much harder.

Caregiving can be rewarding, but it can also be exhausting, emotional, and isolating. Taking time to care for your own well-being is not selfish—it is essential.

At Shuswap Hospice Society, we offer one-on-one caregiver support as well as a monthly drop-in caregiver support group where you can connect with others who understand the journey.

Don’t let the hard days win.

Lean on your support people. Visit a friend. Write in your journal. Take a walk. Sit in the sunshine.

Find healthy ways to process your pain, ease the burden, and support your healing. You don’t have to carry it all alone.

Healing isn’t about avoiding the hard days—it’s about finding the strength and support to move through them, one day at a time. 💜

Volunteer of the month for June
“Keri has been a valued part of our team for over a year, providing compassionate care and support in countless ways for her clients. Her kindness, organization, and dedication shine through in everything she does. Keri consistently goes above and beyond for everyone she meets, while always maintaining professionalism and healthy boundaries.
She has also been a true asset to our vigils — always ready to help on short notice and provide companionship to clients in their final days. Her calm and caring presence brings comfort not only to clients, but to families and fellow volunteers as well.
Thank you, Keri, for the care, compassion, and commitment you bring to SHS every day. We are truly lucky to have you as part of our volunteer family”
