Hospice is a patient-centered form of palliative/end-of-life care which aims to make the last months of life as comfortable and peaceful as possible for patients and their caregivers. Hospice strives to improve quality of life at the end of life, not only for patients, but also for their family and friends. The patient, family and volunteer caregivers are considered an integral unit. Hospice is not a place – it’s a concept. The focus is on caring, not curing; on life, not death. Quality of life, family wellness, community involvement and personal dignity are all part of the compassionate and progressive vision of Hospice.

Planning ahead is an act of care. 💙

SHS is hosting a FREE Advanced Care Planning Workshop on Wednesday, September 23 at 10:00 AM.

Advanced Care Planning (ACP) is about thinking ahead and making decisions about your future health care — so your wishes are known and your loved ones feel more prepared to speak for you if needed.

It’s an opportunity to have important conversations, ask questions, and make a plan that reflects what matters most to you.

Your support stays close to home.

Every dollar donated to the Shuswap Hospice Society stays right here in the Shuswap, helping us walk alongside people and families during some of life’s most difficult moments.

Your generosity helps us support and educate our volunteers through opportunities such as SafeTALK, First Aid & CPR, and ongoing learning. It helps us keep our resource library growing, with information and materials available to our volunteers, clients, caregivers and community.

And because of your support, so much has already been possible in 2026:

💙 More than 100 new clients have received grief support.
💙 Our dedicated volunteers have given over 2,000 hours to supporting people already connected with our services.
💙 We’ve offered free Advanced Care Planning workshops throughout the year.
💙 Community members had the opportunity to participate in Level 1 Therapeutic Touch training at no cost.
💙 We’ve helped make additional wellness supports available, including 50+ hours of massage, 24 hours of Reiki and 12 hours of acupressure.

These numbers represent something much more meaningful: people being supported, listened to and cared for.

At SHS, we believe no one should have to navigate grief, caregiving or end-of-life experiences alone. We are here to offer a compassionate, understanding place to turn—with free services and support available to our community without barriers.

Thank you for helping us be there when our community needs us most.
Your kindness truly makes a difference. 💙

When You Know It’s Coming

Knowing you are losing someone you love is a grief of its own.

The waiting.
The uncertainty.
Knowing it is going to happen, but not knowing when.

That is a lot to carry.

At Shuswap Hospice Society, we can’t take that grief away. But we can help you carry it.

You don’t have to walk through this waiting time alone. ❤️

Caregiving is an act of extraordinary love, but it can also be exhausting, lonely, and overwhelming.

Being a caregiver means becoming everything to someone you love.

You become the nurse, the scheduler, the chef, the medication manager, the chauffeur, the advocate, the housekeeper, and the comforting presence through it all.

Somewhere along the way, the role of wife, husband, partner, son, daughter, or friend can begin to fade into the background. Your relationship changes—not because the love is gone, but because the needs have become so great.

If you're caring for someone you love, please remember: you don't have to carry it all alone.

At Shuswap Hospice Society, we're here to support caregivers as well as those living with a life-limiting illness. Whether you need someone to listen, practical support, or simply a reminder that you're not alone, we're here for you.

Because caregivers deserve care too.
