Effective tomorrow, Friday August 28, at noon PDT the Off Road Vehicle (ORV) prohibition is rescinded in the Southeast, Cariboo, Coastal and Kamloops Fire Centres.

We recognize that ORVs play an important role in recreation, hunting and accessing the outdoors for many. Restrictions are only considered when multiple factors indicate an elevated wildfire risk, heightened wildfire activity and limited capacity to respond to new fire starts.

With improving conditions in some regions of B.C., and cooler wetter weather in the forecast we are now able to rescind these prohibitions. We continue to monitor wildfire risk and prohibitions may be implemented or rescinded as conditions change.

We appreciate the patience and cooperation shown by ORV users during this period. We know many riders take fire prevention seriously and recreate responsibly on established roads and trails. If you're returning to the backcountry, we ask for your support in reporting any new wildfires through our app or by calling *5555.

🚲 Another Section of the Rail Trail is Now Open!

Another section of the Splatsin te Secwépemc / Shuswap North Okanagan Rail Trail has officially opened between Grindrod and Enderby.

With this latest opening, 40 kilometres of continuous rail trail are now open, stretching from km 0.5 in Sicamous to km 40.5 just south of Enderby.

Trail use continues to grow, with more than 26,000 passing trail users recorded on the Sicamous–Mara Lake section and more than 24,000 through Enderby so far in 2026.

Work will continue this fall on the remaining sections, including a new access point at Stepney X Road. Major erosion mitigation work is also planned along the Mara Lake section in September and will require a temporary closure for several weeks.

The Shuswap Trail Alliance has been asked by the Columbia Shuswap Regional District to gather public feedback regarding concerns expressed for safer pedestrian and bicycle use along roads at Swansea Point and along Cambie-Solsqua Road.

Both areas have challenges and limitations, including narrow rural road right of ways managed by the Provincial Ministry of Transportation and Transit (Cambie-Solsqua Road) and limited funding to implement major changes. But the CSRD is interested to better understand the safety concerns to explore potential options to improve walking and cycling in each of these areas.

Please take a few minutes to complete a survey on each of these areas to help us better identify conflict points and uncover barriers preventing more residents from walking or riding.

🐕 Dogs in City Parks: Know Before You Go

Wondering where you can take your dog in Salmon Arm’s parks and open spaces? Following a City-wide review, approximately 60 locations were identified for new or replacement signage to make dog regulations clearer and more consistent across our parks and open spaces. Council approved funding of $7,400 to supply and install the updated signage, helping residents more easily identify where dogs are permitted, where leashes are required and where dogs are prohibited.

🐾 Dogs are permitted ON LEASH in:
▪️ Blackburn Park
▪️ Canoe Beach Park*
▪️ Fletcher Park
▪️ Jackson Park
▪️ Klahani Park
▪️ McGuire Lake Park
▪️ Marine Peace Park
▪️ Foreshore Trail*
▪️ Mt. Ida Cemetery

🌲 Off-leash access is permitted in designated park areas, including Little Mountain Park, Park Hill Park, Klahani Park Fenced Dog Park Area and Coyote Park, provided dogs have a valid licence/tag and collar, owners carry a leash and maintain visual and verbal control.

🚫 Dogs are prohibited from:
▪️ Sports fields
▪️ Playgrounds
▪️ Beaches
▪️ Other areas specifically identified as restricted

At Canoe Beach, dogs may be walked on leash through the park to access the designated off-leash dog park but are not permitted on the beach itself.

The updated signage will help protect park spaces and make it easier for everyone to understand where dogs can and cannot go.

🐻 Bear Activity Advisory – Rail Trail Area

August 11, 2026

Splatsin community members and Rail Trail users are advised of recent black bear activity in the area of the Rail Trail near Old Vernon Road and Fortune Road.

A community member walking with a small dog encountered a black bear in the area. During the encounter, the bear stood on its hind legs but did not pursue the individual or the dog.

Please use extra caution when travelling through the area and remain aware of your surroundings.

For your safety:

• Keep dogs leashed and under control.
• Give bears plenty of space and never approach or feed them.
• If you encounter a bear, remain calm, avoid running, and slowly increase your distance.
• Be particularly alert when walking with children or pets.
• Avoid using headphones or anything else that may limit your awareness of your surroundings.

Please share this information with others who may be using the Rail Trail.

Given the scope and scale of wildfires currently burning in B.C., and to further protect public safety, recreational off-road vehicle use will be prohibited on Crown land in the Kamloops and Southeast Fire Centres, as well as parts of the Cariboo and Coastal Fire Centres. This prohibition is effective immediately, as of 12 p.m. (noon) on August 10, 2026.

🚭 A Reminder: Smoking is Prohibited in City Parks & on Trails

With dry summer conditions and elevated fire risk, please remember that smoking is prohibited in City of Salmon Arm parks and open spaces, including municipal trails.

Discarded ci******es can easily ignite dry grass, leaves and other vegetation. Even a cigarette that appears to be extinguished can retain enough heat to start a fire.

🌲 When enjoying our parks and trails:
▪️ Please respect all No Smoking bylaws.
▪️ Never discard ci******es or other smoking materials on the ground.
▪️ Help keep our parks, trails and surrounding neighbourhoods safe during these dry conditions.

🔥 One small spark can have serious consequences.

The Shuswap Trail Alliance is looking for someone to join our trail crew this fall.

Start: As soon as possible
End: Late November

This is outdoor, physical work building and maintaining trails throughout the Shuswap.

We're looking for someone who:
• Has experience working outdoors in all kinds of weather.
• Is reliable and self-motivated.
• Works well as part of a team.
• Is comfortable with physical labour.

Trail maintenance experience is an asset but not required. We will provide training. Wages are negotiable based on experience.

♦️The Evacuation Alerts issued in Electoral Area D in response to the Bradley Creek Wildfire (K41351) are unchanged at this time. ♦️

🔷 The CSRD has sent multiple fire and structure protection crews and equipment to assist our neighbours with the numerous fires around the province. The CSRD is always aware that we also need to keep local resources in our areas to ensure appropriate levels of fire protection for our residents. The excellent response to the Vella Road Fire last night shows that our local firefighters are ready and able to answer local calls for assistance.

🔷 If you see fire, call 911 immediately. Recent incidents in the CSRD have shown that delaying a call to emergency services while attempting to fight a fire can allow it to grow quickly and become more difficult to control. Early notification gives fire crews the best opportunity to respond rapidly and contain a fire before it escalates, helping protect people, property, and surrounding areas.
