Fresh Start Services for Women Inc Fresh Start Services is a community agency that works to reduce poverty and homelessness by offering support, education and advocacy to those in need.

Our goal is to reach out to those at the lowest point in their lives by giving them support and access to available resources and programs thereby helping them attain new-found stability, and achieve self-sufficient lives. Each case that we accept is different, but there are three general steps that we follow:

(1) Initial Assessment: addressing the causes of their poverty and impending homelessness, and taking care of their immediate needs. (2) Advocacy & Foundation Building: in order to make long-term changes in our clients lives and setting them on the path to stable and self-sufficient living, Fresh Start:

• advocates on behalf of clients in crisis situations
• develops collaborative action plans, sets goals and timelines
• provides agency referrals, access to programs, and possible emergency funds

(3) Follow-Up Support: for each client, we develop a long-term development plan for self sufficiency, through life skills advice and practical planning. We will ensure that Fresh Start clients have the best chance to maintain stable lives by active participation with other service agencies. Fresh Start is dedicated to helping the poor, working poor, homeless, and those who can’t find help with existing social agencies. We have the skills to help with many different poverty-related situations, including evictions, forced re-locations due to fires, landlord bankruptcy, poor living conditions, inability to pay damage deposits and utilities - just to name a few. Every case is unique, but our goal is to advocate and stand up for our clients, put them in contact with available resources, and give them the best possible support to have quality, self-sufficient lives. If you have new adult socks (they don't need to be knitted), please drop them off to St. Mark's United Church (50 Dexter Drive) in October. We will be making a delivery to Stone Church on your behalf at the end of the month to help keep our community warm. Thank you!

UPDATE: Applications for this group are now closed.

There are times when grief feels bigger than words.

A memory, a feeling, a loss, or a life change can be difficult to explain, even to those closest to us. Sometimes healing begins not with conversation, but with creating.

This fall, we are honored to partner with the Saint John Arts Centre to offer a free six-week Grief & Loss Art Group for adults who are living with grief and loss. Guided by art therapist Olivia Stymiest (from Rising Tides) and local arts instructors, participants will have the opportunity to explore their grief through creativity, reflection, and connection with others who understand.

No artistic experience is needed. This isn't about making art for others to see. It's about giving yourself permission to express what is on your heart in a safe and supportive space.

This partnership allows us and the Compassionate Grief Centre, Saint John Art Centre and Rising Tides Counselling Services to help people who are grieving find healing.

Space is limited to 10 participants, with sessions beginning October 26.

We are grateful to the Saint John Arts Centre for helping create another pathway for people to find support, connection, and hope as they navigate their grief journey together.

Applications are now open and can be completed here:

We are heartbroken over the loss of Nick Shepard, our Outreach Manager but more importantly our friend and mentor.

Nick touched the lives of many in our community and beyond; his outreach was not limited to our unsheltered community but included agency partners, government, landlords and local businesses.

Whether he was leading his team through brush and brook to reach an encampment, or showing up “almost late” to a meeting - you could be sure that there would be a story or anecdote and an extra large tea! And leadership. Nick spoke up and he spoke out; not just for those he served but for our community as a whole.

He was the heart of our work and our office; we shared laughs and tears and moments that are forever etched on our hearts. His were always the first hands reaching to help his colleagues; whether it was in our office, in the greater community or across our region.

His passion for this work was second only to his family and his love for them. We are blessed and eternally grateful to them for sharing his light with us and giving us the gift he was to us all.

We appreciate the support, messages and remembrances from everyone who knew him and our Fresh Start family. We also want to thank the clients who came together to make sure our staff could have space and time this week for him; a testament to the respect they have for him and his work on the street and with our unhoused.

His thoughtfulness and humour made the work feel lighter and his ability to bring people together made us better; as an agency, a team and as partners in the greater work.

Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra.
