A very special milestone for members of our YMCA Newcomer and Community Connections team. ❤️

Please join us in congratulating Kateryna Didenko, Rahima Mahbub, Maher Al Sheikh Zein and Rusbel Cotua on becoming Canadian citizens! 🎉

Each of them plays an important role in helping newcomers feel welcomed, supported and connected through settlement support, language learning, housing assistance and being one of the first friendly faces someone meets at the Y.

Today, we are especially happy to celebrate them and this meaningful new chapter in their own journeys. We are proud to celebrate this special milestone with you!

Meet Farhiyo Abdi Sabriye. ❤️

When Farhiyo arrived in Saint John in 2019, she was raising a family on her own, expecting her fourth child and beginning a new chapter in a place where everything felt unfamiliar.

"When I came to Canada, I didn't even know the 26 letters of the alphabet. Nothing. No English, no people, only winter. But the YMCA did everything for me. They became like my family, my friends."

From the start, the Y supported her settlement journey, helping with housing, healthcare, English learning, and employment. Through YMCA training and Employment Services, she earned industry certifications, created her first Canadian resume, prepared for interviews, and gained confidence pursuing work.

When asked what she would say to newcomers arriving in Canada feeling scared or overwhelmed, her answer comes without hesitation.

"Don't stress. Saint John has good people, and the YMCA will help with everything, school, community, jobs, language. The YMCA is my home now."

🚗 We’re looking for volunteer drivers!

A lack of transportation shouldn’t mean a lack of access to healthy food.

Through the YMCA’s Y Delivery Program, volunteers help deliver monthly food baskets from four local food banks to individuals and families who face transportation barriers.

Whether you can help regularly or just from time to time, your time can make a real difference.*💙

Help us make sure food and a little extra community support gets where it’s needed most.

📩 Interested in volunteering as a driver? Fill out the form: https://yswnb.com/44PFcly
