Avenue B Harm Reduction

Avenue B Harm Reduction AIDS Saint John is a non-profit organization that aims to improve the quality of life for those affected by HIV/AIDS. Stephen and the Fundy Isles.

Our mission is rooted in compassion, education, and empowerment, recognizing that every person deserves support and respect in their journey toward safer choices and healthier lives. In addition to the organization’s goal of reducing the stigma associated with HIV, the organization strives to reduce the spread of HIV through prevention education and public awareness. For over 20 years, AIDS Saint

John has provided services from Sussex to St. A few of the services include: a resource library, an anonymous online question board, treatment information, advocacy, awareness events, education, a needle distribution program, referrals and support for people living with HIV as well as their loved ones. These services promote the healthy life choices that are needed to reduce the spread of HIV.

We are grateful to Cait Vihvelin for her leadership in bringing this important ResearchNB-funded project forward, and we are honoured to be part of this collaboration.

Stigma remains one of the most significant barriers people face when accessing healthcare and support services. By bringing together research, community knowledge, and lived expertise, this project will help identify opportunities to strengthen health equity and improve access to person-centred care across New Brunswick. ❤️

😞 We discovered today that two of our community sharps disposal boxes have been damaged (Cliff & Coburg)

These boxes play an important role in keeping used sharps off the ground and providing a safe disposal option for community members. When they are damaged, it impacts everyone's safety.

We will be looking into repair or replacement options and would welcome support from anyone with experience in metal fabrication, welding, or repairs. If you know someone who may be able to assist (we will compensate!) please send us an email at [email protected]

Thank you ❤️

PS: We accept all sharps here in the office, and there is also a box in front of the Hub on Prince Edward St, as well as Rainbow Park for uptown locations.

In this episode of Lives Not Labels: Seeing Beyond Stigma, we sit with the complicated reality of loving someone through addiction.

This conversation is about hope and fear. Love and pain. Boundaries and compassion. It is about realizing that addiction impacts more than one person, and that partners, families, and loved ones often need support, too.

Thank you to our guest for trusting us ❤️

PS: There are no one-size-fits-all answers in conversations like this. What feels helpful, healing, or grounding for one person may not be the right fit for another. At the heart of it is honesty, courage, and connection and sometimes that is what helps people feel a little less alone.

📣 At this time, we are not yet hearing reports of overdose numbers locally that are anywhere close to what has recently been reported in Moncton in the Saint John region.

As far as we are aware, we have not received any indication of a local spike, and our community partners have not yet reported a notable uptick in overdoses this week.

That said, we are continuing to watch the situation closely. We often see drug supply trends emerge in Moncton before they reach Saint John, as Moncton can act as a distribution hub, though this is not always the case.

Our drug checking equipment has been detecting more veterinary sedatives, including medetomidine. These substances do not respond to naloxone and may be contributing to some of the overdose concerns being seen elsewhere in the province.

Naloxone is still important and should always be used in a suspected overdose, especially because fentanyl or other opioids may also be present. Call 911, give naloxone, provide rescue breathing, and stay with the person until help arrives.
