Through advocacy, self-reflection, cultural humility, and addressing racism when it occurs, LPNs contribute to equitable healthcare experiences for Indigenous peoples and communities while fulfilling their professional obligations under the Code of Ethics and supporting CLPNS' public protection mandate.

Every healthcare setting carries some level of risk. Recognizing and managing that risk is an important part of an LPN’s professional responsibility.

LPNs help manage risk by:

🩺 Identifying high-risk situations
🩺 Adjusting care based on assessment findings
🩺 Applying knowledge, skills, and clinical judgment
🩺 Collaborating with the healthcare team

Risk can be affected by:

🩺 Client acuity and complexity
🩺 The LPN’s knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience
🩺 The practice environment and available resources

Different settings come with different levels of support. Acute care may offer greater access to resources and team support, while long-term care, home care, and independent practice may have fewer resources, potentially increasing risk and professional accountability.

LPNs in independent practice also have additional regulatory responsibilities, including developing policies, maintaining additional general liability insurance, and reporting services to CLPNS.

Risk exists in every area of nursing. Understanding and proactively managing risk helps protect clients, support safe care, and uphold professional standards.
