Foster Friday Update: Azari & Mason 🤍
Unfortunately, this is not the update we were hoping to share about Azari.
Three weeks ago, Azari underwent surgery to repair a cleft palate, likely caused by the same trauma that shattered her jaw, broke her leg, and damaged part of her nose. Her case has been especially challenging because her jaw healed in an unusual position, and the cleft is located at the very back of her palate, making surgery much more difficult.
At her two-week follow-up, things looked promising. The stitches appeared to be holding, and there was only a tiny opening left that needed to be closed. Yesterday’s plan was simply to place a stitch in that small area.
Unfortunately, once Azari was under anesthesia and the surgeon could get a better look, they discovered that some of the previous repairs had reopened. While this was disappointing news, it allowed the surgeon to reassess the situation and try a different approach. This time, a flap technique was used in hopes of creating a stronger repair.
The reality is that this is a very difficult surgery, and there are no guarantees. But after everything Azari has survived, she deserves every chance possible to heal, live a normal life, and one day find a loving forever home.
For now, Azari will need to keep her feeding tube for at least another two weeks, bringing her recovery period to a minimum of five weeks. While she is doing well overall, she is understandably not thrilled about not being able to eat on her own. The feeding tube allows her to receive the nutrition she needs without putting stress on the surgical site, giving this repair the best possible chance to heal properly.
We remain hopeful that this additional time will allow her mouth to heal and finally put her on the path toward a normal, happy future.
On a happier note, Mason continues to make progress!
When Mason came into rescue, he had more than 17 ticks attached to his head, an injured paw, and was struggling with recurring fevers, poor appetite, and weight loss. Thankfully, over the past 10 days, he has been steadily improving. He is eating better, gaining weight, and even starting to play.
The funniest part is that Mason doesn’t seem to realize how big he is. He keeps trying to play with the kittens, and they’re not nearly as excited about the idea as he is!
We are hopeful that if he continues on this path, he’ll soon be healthy enough to start looking for his forever home.
